God of War Dev's Job Ad Teases Fantasy World for Unannounced Game

A new job posting on Santa Monica Studio's official website reveals the developer behind God of War is hiring for an unannounced project that takes place in a fantasy world. It's been known for quite a while that the company has two titles in production - the God of War 2018 sequel and a mystery game. Santa Monica Studio started staffing up for the unannounced title months ago, though there exists no word on what precisely the group is developing.

In the absence of details, hopes are high the mystery project revolves around a new intellectual property, especially since the studio's internal team hasn't completed a game based on original IP since God of War's advent in 2005. That doesn't mean the group's rested on its laurels in the last decade and a half, though. Santa Monica Studio spent a considerable amount of time developing a sci-fi adventure several years ago. Stig Asmussen, who served as Game Director on Respawn's Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, helmed the sci-fi title, which fell to the cutting room in 2014. It now seems the God of War development house is once more trying its hand at something completely fresh.

A job advertisement for a Senior Character Concept Artist recently popped up on the Santa Monica Studio website. As noted by ResetEra, the listing specifically makes mention of a "new unannounced title" that's set across "fantasy-based worlds." The ad doesn't offer much else in the way of notable details and, interestingly, it only addresses "the PlayStation console" as the platform. Thus, it remains to be seen whether or not this particular project will serve as a cross-gen release or a PlayStation 5 exclusive.

God of War itself boasts elements of fantasy, so, technically, the "fantasy-based" wording could indicate that a spinoff or another mainline sequel is underway. Regardless, it's clear the studio has yet to cease its head hunt while building out the secret title's creative team.

In the more immediate future, fans are awaiting news about the follow-up to God of War 2018. An incredibly brief Ragnarok-labeled teaser trailer from late last year promised a 2021 launch date, but such a release seems less and less likely as this year wears on.
