As inspiring as superheroes can be, it seems like quite a lot of them are borne out of some very tragic pasts. The heroes in the MCU are no different, even if their adventures might be more light-hearted. Looking at the main players in the cinematic universe, just about all of them have experienced some trauma in their lives before becoming superheroes.
While each of these heroes has undergone their own challenges and difficulties, some of them have been through a lot more than others. Yet all of them were able to overcome it in their own ways and become the heroes fans know and love.
10 Iron Man
It has become a bit of a cliche that all superheroes lost their parents at a young age. While that is not always the case, it does happen to be true of Tony Stark, the first hero to be introduced in the MCU. His parents died when he was a young man and he took over his father's company, building an impressive legacy of his own.
Certainly, the death of his parents affects Tony, especially after learning the truth of what happened. However, this is something that many of the other heroes experienced as well. Plus, it's hard to feel too sorry for a billionaire who made his fortune selling weapons.
9 Ant-Man
It's interesting that one of the most lovable and goofy members of the Avengers is the one with a criminal past. Of course, Scott Lang was a criminal with the heart of gold, acting like a Robin Hood character to steal from an overcharging tech company and distribute the wealth to their customers.
As a result of his prison time, Scott lost his family, with his wife leaving him and taking their daughter until he cleaned up his life. Despite his noble intentions, Scott can really only blame himself for his prison time as he could have seen justice done without breaking the law.
8 Doctor Strange
Before becoming the Sorcerer Supreme, Stephen Strange was already a well-respected hero as one of the best surgeons in the world. However, after a serious car accident leaves his hands severely damaged, that career is taken away from him.
It is hard to imagine having something like that ripped away in an instant and it's not hard to see why Strange's life falls apart as a result. But being completely honest, Strange was a pretty self-centered man, caring more about glory than his patients. Also, it's lucky his reckless driving didn't kill someone else.
7 Falcon
With his headlining role in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, fans are starting to learn more about Sam Wilson who was once a supporting player in the MCU. Like many of the heroes, he lost both of his parents and he has been struggling with his sister ever since.
It is also revealed in Sam's first appearance in Captain America: The Winter Soldier that he lost his wingman in the war. However, as a testament to the kind of man and hero he is, Sam started dedicating his time to helping other veterans deal with their trauma.
6 Captain America
Steve Rogers is perhaps the heart of the MCU and the one who always knows what to say to rally the troops, especially after a defeat. Perhaps he's so good at it because he has been dealt a few defeats before he ever picked up the famous shield.
Steve is yet another member of the Avengers who lost his parents when he was young. He was lucky to have a good friend like Bucky by his side at the time, but Steve was also dealing with his own health issues which prevented him from joining the army.
5 Captain Marvel
Unlike most of the other heroes in the MCU, Carol Danvers learns about her past at the same time as the audience. Being trained as a Kree warrior without memory of her past, Carol had no idea she used to have an entire life on Earth.
It is heartbreaking to think that an entire life was ripped away from Carol without her even knowing. Loved ones thought she was dead and mourned her. However, the glimpse of her past also shows how resilient Carol is, always picking herself up after getting knocked down.
4 Hulk
Bruce Banner is one of the few heroes whose origin story is not really shown to audiences, except for the credit sequence during The Incredible Hulk. When he is fully introduced in that movie, he is living in hiding trying to learn how to control the Hulk inside of him.
As he is featured more in the MCU, the audience learns more about how much of a nightmare his condition really is. He is unable to get close to people, unable to have children, and he described himself as being like an exposed nerve when in Hulk mode. Thankfully, he later learns to coexist with Hulk.
3 Scarlet Witch
As WandaVision proved, few Marvel heroes have endured as much grief as Wanda Maximoff, and much of it occurred before she was even introduced in the MCU. Coming from the war-torn country of Sokovia, Wanda grew up surrounded by constant fighting and eventually saw her parents killed in front of her.
Her story of being stuck under rubble waiting for the second bomb to go off gives insight into her villainous past and why she volunteered to be subjected to Hydra experiments that eventually awakened her superpowers.
2 The Winter Soldier
When Bucky is first introduced in the MCU, he is seen as a good friend and a brave soldier, but the process by which he was turned into the Winter Soldier changed the man that he was. After falling to his apparent death and losing his arm, Bucky was captured by Hyrda and turned into their new weapon.
Bucky spent decades as a mindless killer with no agency of his own. When he is saved by Steve, he attempts to live a normal life only for Zemo to reawaken his past. Even now that Hydra's brainwashing of his mind is undone, he is still haunted by the memories of all the lives her took.
1 Black Widow
With Natasha Romanoff finally getting her own solo movie, fans will surely be introduced to more of her tragic past that has only been hinted at. In many ways, Natasha's past life was very much like the one Bucky endured. Though she was not mind-controlled by Hydra, she was brainwashed from a young age to be a killer.
The thought of Natasha going through all of this as a child is heartbreaking. She is also haunted by her past, and her sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame was her way of seeking some redemption.
