After so many years on the air, viewers of Sister Wives are wondering if or when patriarch Kody Brown will start seeking a fifth wife. Though viewership has been unsteady, the TLC show has continued to air for 11 years and 15 seasons. Kody saved the show from cancellation when he negotiated a pay cut for him and his wives, which made the show more financially viable. When the series premiered, Kody had three wives and was courting Robyn, who eventually became his fourth wife. Is a fifth wife on the horizon for this TLC family?
Kody is not known for being very empathetic, often appearing confused when other people don’t experience the same emotion as him. Fans who have watched since the beginning can’t understand why these women choose to stay with him. But in an episode of season 15, Kody seemed to finally be maturing at least a little, telling his wives, “I know I have all the love I want and you guys sometimes feel like you’re pining constantly for me to give you some.” Acknowledging that unfairness – that he gets four wives, but each of those wives gets only 1/4 of a husband – possibly offers an answer to the question of a fifth wife.
With all the problems he and his current wives are having, it's clearly not the time to try and bring in a new wife. Shortly after marrying Robyn, Cody began threatening to divorce her. Kody’s relationship with Meri seems to have ended, at least romantically and legally, even though they still consider themselves spiritually married. Christine has become more verbally antagonistic over the years and more open about her jealousy of the other wives and not wanting to be around them. Janelle is feeling isolated and lonely. With all of Kody’s wives struggling, none of them would welcome a fifth wife, though it’s not really up to them.
Kody blames the women for their jealousy rather than the family's polygamous lifestyle. He sees the fact that these women don’t want to share their husband with anyone as a flaw with them, which means he’s liable to make the same mistake again. While Kody stated he regrets his first marriage, he still clings to the dream of a household full of wives who love him and each other. Any man who marries multiple women while expecting each of them to be loyal to him is clearly more focused on his own happiness than the happiness of his family. So, it’s not impossible that Kody will make a bad situation worse by one day announcing he wants another wife.
Rumors of Kody seeking a fifth wife, or even already having one, have been swirling since his fourth marriage. There’s no evidence yet that Kody has or is seeking another wife, but it’s understandable that people expect it. Kody isn’t limited to how many spiritual wives he can have, so why would he stop pursuing new, younger wives? The women all seem eager at the beginning, but viewers have watched how the lifestyle takes its toll on them. Kody's rules for his wives fail to keep the peace or give anyone what they need.
Despite being a father and grandfather, Kody hasn’t shown a lot of emotional maturity and has failed repeatedly to make the best choice for his family. It’s not unreasonable to think he will blindly jump into another marriage thinking that will fix things. There’s no sign Kody is dating again and producers would most likely want to broadcast the drama of adding yet another wife to this unhappy bunch. For now, at least, the family can continue referring to Kody’s long hair as his fifth wife.
