The Royal Opera House announces early plans for its 2021/22 season including ballet The Dark Crystal: Odyssey based on the 1982 film by Jim Henson. The Opera House hasn't been able to complete a full season since 2019 due to the ongoing pandemic and is hitting the ground running with this production amongst others.
The official Dark Crystal Twitter account announced The Dark Crystal: Odyssey, which it describes as "new dance work for family audiences, directed and choreographed by Wayne McGregor." Attached is a link to the Royal Opera House website which expands on the information. The Linbury Theatre will present the ballet as it "continues to be a driving force for collaboration and creativity, featuring independent companies and schools and developing new work."
This news could help pacify fans disappointed by The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance's cancelation after just one season. The Netflix series was critically acclaimed but apparently difficult and expensive to make. The show ended on a cliffhanger and producer Lisa Henson promised to look for ways to continue telling the story of Age of Resistance. While Odyssey may not be directly connected to Age of Resistance, it shows The Jim Henson Company hasn't given up on The Dark Crystal as a whole.
The official description of the ballet reads:
The Royal Ballet presents Company Wayne McGregor in The Dark Crystal: Odyssey, a work for family audiences choreographed and directed by Wayne McGregor. Based on Jim Henson’s iconic 1982 film, this magical coming-of-age story brings together a team of world-class collaborators including artists Brian and Wendy Froud, composer Joel Cadbury, digital designers kontrastmoment, lighting designer Lucy Carter, dramaturg Uzma Hameed, costume designer Philip Delamore and face-and-body-artist Alex Box, with puppets and props from Jim Henson's Creature Shop.
