The premiere season of The Bachelorette ended with the successful pairing of bachelorette Trista Rehn and firefighter Ryan Sutter. They married on a TV special in 2006 and have two children together. While Ryan’s family life seems great, he has been plagued by chronic health problems for some time. He has been tested for everything from cancer to COVID-19, but tested negative for everything. He and Trista have been open with fans on Instagram about this ongoing experience, and a recent post by Ryan points to possible answers.
Ryan and Trista are one of only five couples that have stayed together after 16 seasons of The Bachelorette. While one woman concurrently dating 25 guys is not the craziest dating show idea, it isn’t really what most people would consider a success, with less than a third of the contestants actually finding love. Statistics on The Bachelor are even worse, with only one successful marriage out of 25 seasons. Ryan and Trista are one of the few exceptions, with their marriage seeming to stay strong, even through Ryan’s health crisis.
On May 23, 2021, Ryan started a post on Instagram with “Things are looking up…” Fans eagerly read his introspective post about the “maybes” of life. “As I continue to contemplate the experiences of the past year, I’m beginning to cast off the maybes and find certainty within. I am certain of my place in life professionally and personally. Answers have unfolded in regard to my health and I am certain of my direction moving forward there. (more on that to come...) Things are indeed looking up...”
Many celebrities suffer from chronic illness, though not many of them talk openly about their experiences for fear of being labeled weak or a whiner. In previous Instagram posts, Ryan spoke about how he considered his health problems a weakness, but it was only in asking others for help that he realized suffering isn’t something that can or should be powered through alone. He credits his family and friends, particularly Trista, for helping him research, find options, and be resilient.
Many people struggle with chronic health problems, and pain without a diagnosis is frustrating and scary. Modern medicine leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to doctors being able to accurately diagnose chronic conditions. A late diagnosis can prove deadly for victims. Luckily for The Bachelorette’s Ryan Sutter, he has lots of support and he may finally be finding some answers. Most importantly, he is keeping a positive attitude. He ended his Instagram post with “I wonder if maybe what may be difficult is necessary to find what may be our greatest potential?”
