DC's Evil Justice League is Creating Even More New Heroes

Spoilers for Crime Syndicate of America #3 ahead!

The Crime Syndicate of America, the evil version of the Justice League, has come together as a team in issue three of their current mini-series, and at the issue’s end, it is revealed that the Syndicate has inspired even more metahumans to make their presence known on Earth-3.

There have been multiple versions of the Crime Syndicate through the years, and the most recent incarnation debuted at the beginning of Infinite Frontier. Like their predecessors, this new Syndicate calls the twisted world of Earth-3 home; on this world, most people with superpowers are villains. When Starro attacks their world, the Crime Syndicate, consisting of Ultraman, Superwoman, Owlman, and the evil John Stewart named Power Ring, among others, come together to turn back Starro and save their world. And now DC has revealed that there was an unintended consequence of Starro’s attack, one that will make the Crime Syndicate’s life much more complicated.

In the issue, written by Andy Schmidt, with art by Kieran McKeown, inks by Dexter Vines, colors by Steve Oliff, and letters by Rob Leigh, the Crime Syndicate is successful in defeating Starro, dealing the intergalactic conqueror a devastating blow. As the world reacts and begins to come to terms with what happened, reports start filtering in of other metahumans revealing themselves. Readers see Earth-3 versions of Aquaman, Vixen, and Red Star all lording over pieces of Starro. The media has lost track of how many metahumans there are, but the count could potentially be in the thousands, leaving one commentator to wonder if we were witnessing the beginning of a “new world order.”

The issue ends with the Crime Syndicate standing firmly together as a team, which in light of all the newly-revealed metahumans, was probably a good idea. As mentioned earlier, most superpowered individuals on Earth-3 tend to swing villainous, so the question is: will all the others go this way too? Or will some stand in defiance of the new Crime Syndicate? A key difference between the current incarnation of the Syndicate and previous versions was that earlier teams worked as back-up for Ultraman, but here it will be much more of a team effort. Will the Syndicate bring in others as time goes on? Furthermore, almost all of the new characters revealed this issue, such as Vixen and Red Star, exist outside of America, so perhaps readers will get insight into Earth-3's international politics as well when the Crime Syndicate comes into conflict with them.

A new era is dawning on Earth-3. Ultraman no longer fights alone, and now has a whole team at his side. More importantly, other metahumans are rising up as well, ensuring the Crime Syndicate, the evil Justice League, stays busy.
