The Incan Empire is taking on the Wild West in St. Mercy from Image Comics. This new miniseries will take revenge to another level. Blending history, mythology, and the supernatural, this series is unlike many western stories told before.
Image Comics has announced several new series recently, including Ant, Made in Korea, and Ordinary Gods. Now, a new series is in the works that will mix a classic story trope with some new supernatural elements. Image has released a preview of St. Mercy, which blends history with Latin American mythology.
Image Comics' press release reveals details for this miniseries. Created by John Zuur Platten and Atilio Rojo, St. Mercy will be published by Image/Top Cow. It is a miniseries consisting of four issues, centered on a story of revenge. Mercedes Oro and an Incan child seem to be the focus of this series as sacrifice, loss, and revenge conjoin their fates. Check out the cover, some preview pages, and the series summary here:
A tale of vengeful retribution, St. Mercy pits the Incan Empire against the American West - and features two strong, determined young women who must defy authority and ultimately embrace their destiny. Mercedes Oro is one of the surviving descendants of the Incans who has been charged with protecting a cache of cursed gold used in their child sacrifice rituals.
But when an outlaw tries to steal the gold for his band of thieves, he unknowingly sets events in motion that will unleash an angry god who is willing to travel through the centuries to have what he desires.
The preview from Image Comics introduces Toctollissica, a young Incan girl who is a candidate for a ceremonial selection. She is intended to be given as a gift to the gods. It is also revealed that she may not be the optimal choice since she has not had her menarche like the other candidates, creating dissension between key people in the tribe within this story. The Incas did have sacrificial rituals that often included children, known as qhapaq hucha or capacocha. This comic shows the young girls being fed heartily to increase their weight, which was a component of this sacrificial practice in history. Toctollissica is failing to gain weight, marking her as a peculiar individual amongst this group. She is destined to be given to Supay, the Incan deity of death who rules over the underworld - Ukhu Pacha. However, her body's failure to physically manifest needed characteristics may complicate her perceived role and anger the gods.
This story is being written by John Zuur Platten, who has written a number of stories across different mediums. His portfolio includes work on the video games Jurassic World: Evolution and The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Athena and Wanted: Weapons of Fate. The art is done by Atilio Rojo, an artist who has done work with IDW on Transformers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and many other comics. How the worlds of Toctollissica and Mercedes will collide should be intriguing and most likely - bloody, considering that bandits, deities, and sacrifice are all involved. The first issue of St. Mercy from Image Comics will release on August 25, 2021.
