Luke Skywalker's Journey To Rebuild The Jedi Order Began After Empire Strikes Back

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Star Wars #13

In the latest issue of Marvel Comics' Star Wars, Luke Skywalker has just been given the tools he needs to rebuild the Jedi Order. In the days after The Empire Strikes Back, Luke was logically shaken due to the revelation that Darth Vader was his father, though he had since resolved himself to continue his Jedi Path, determined to learn all he can. Furthermore, he's found himself a new lightsaber to wield, though R2-D2 seems to have exactly what Luke needs to move forward and bring back the Jedi, even as the Rebels are in the midst of trying to rescue Han Solo from the clutches of Boba Fett in this prelude to War of the Bounty Hunters.

In previous issues of Star Wars from writer Charles Soule and artist Roman Rosanas, Luke has been determined to regain his footing despite his dark parentage, continuing to be mindful of the training he received from Jedi Master Yoda while also keeping his mind open and alert to the Force, searching for any signs of its guidance for what he should do next while assisting the Rebels in their efforts to regroup, having been scattered after the Battle of Hoth due to the Empire's relentless pursuit.

Now, Star Wars #13 begins with Luke training and honing his skills as a Jedi when R2-D2 and C-3Po meet him with news. Apparently, R2 is very eager to share some significant information, though a Boba Fett sighting on the Smuggler's Moon of Nar Shadaa takes precedence, seeing Luke teaming up with Chewbacca to follow up on the potential lead. After having just missed Fett with Luke warding off the angry Hutt forces he left behind, Artoo finally gets to reveal his information, revealing that he acquired a very important list when he was helping the Rebels escape the Death Star during A New Hope: the locations of various Jedi outposts and temples hidden throughout the galaxy.

Luke's not kidding about the list keeping him busy for decades. As revealed in Charles Soule's The Rise of Kylo Ren mini-series, Luke would travel and visit many of these abandoned temples and outposts with his nephew Ben Solo, seeking knowledge and relics that helped in his attempt to rebuild the Jedi Order. Furthermore, many of these outposts like the one on the planet Elphrona have been featured in The High Republic novels such as Light of the Jedi (also by Soule).

As a result, R2-D2 has given Luke exactly what he needs to start his journey to rebuild the Jedi Order, and it's cool that it's happening before the events of Return of the Jedi, giving that title an even greater significance in the grand scheme of the Skywalker saga. Now, it seems likely that Luke will continue to find more knowledge of the Jedi of the past as soon as he can in future issues, creating the opportunity to learn from them and become a Jedi master himself. However, one can imagine that War of the Bounty Hunters and the Rebels' first chance to try and save Han will come first as the Star Wars series continues.
