Marvel Delays Make 2023 The First Year With Five MCU Movie Releases

Marvel Studios delays the release dates for two upcoming mystery Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, resulting in five MCU movies scheduled for 2023. Kevin Feige and the MCU team kept the Phase 4 slate a mystery until after Avengers: Endgame's release, but they spent the last half of 2019 unveiling multiple movies that were scheduled to come out by the end of 2021, not to mention the first wave of MCU Disney+ shows. COVID-19 dramatically altered these plans, but Marvel is finally regaining its footing when it comes to their long-term movie plans.

The movie side of Phase 4 begins soon with Black Widow's long-awaited release in theaters and on Disney+. It is one of four MCU movies scheduled to release before the end of 2021, and Marvel has already confirmed release dates for an additional four movies in 2022. More recently, the studio announced the first two MCU blockbusters that fans will see in 2023. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 are kicking off that year, but Disney already had two additional spots on its 2023 release schedule for mystery Marvel movies.

According to Comicbook, Walt Disney Studios announced some changes to its release calendar and they impact the MCU. A mystery Marvel movie that was scheduled for October 2022 has been pushed a full year to October 7, 2023. This delay resulted in Marvel Studios also moving its untitled November movie from November 3 to November 10, 2023. Marvel Studios also has a  July 28, 2023 release date that is not claimed. This delay means 2023 will be the first time the MCU releases five movies in a single calendar year. The 2023 slate is as follows:

  • Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania - 2/17/2023
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 - 5/5/2023
  • Untitled Marvel - 7/28/2023
  • Untitled Marvel - 10/7/2023
  • Untitled Marvel - 11/10/2023

Without confirmation on which MCU projects will occupy these 2023 release dates, fans will be left to speculate what could hit theaters then. Marvel Studios is developing several movies that do not have confirmed release dates. Mahershala Ali's Blade and Jon Watt's Fantastic 4 are both strong contenders to receive one of these vacant spots. Movies like Deadpool 3 and Captain America 4 could claim the additional 2023 movie release date given their status at Marvel Studios. It is also possible they are working on a secret project that will be ready two years from now.

No matter what movies come out on these dates, that won't change the fact that Marvel Studios is somehow continuing to increase its output. Despite all the talk about superhero fatigue and audiences eventually getting burnt out by the flood of MCU content, Disney and Marvel show no signs of slowing down. Let's not forget that there are also several MCU Disney+ shows in development too. Five movies in 2023 - plus multiple Disney+ shows - is an ambitious goal and will surely test how many Marvel movies audiences are interested in seeing each year. Now we'll have to wait and see if Marvel sticks to this plan or if they abandon one of these new MCU 2023 release dates at a later point.
