Resident Evil Village Heisenberg's Factory: The Final Area Is RE8's Worst

[Warning: SPOILERS for Resident Evil Village follow.]

Resident Evil Village has some fantastic levels, but the final new area isn't among them. Despite its role of leading into the end of the adventure, Heisenberg's Factory is the most unoriginal stage in Resident Evil Village.

Most of Resident Evil Village's marketing focused on Lady Dimitrescu, especially after so many people on the internet became such big fans of hers. This attention on the tall lady worked in the game's favor; Lady Dimitrescu is only in Village for a short time, as the first major area in the game is devoted to her. The game has other stages and foes that were barely mentioned by Capcom, giving fans lots of unexpected surprises.

The first three areas in Resident Evil Village (not counting the village itself, as this is more of a hub stage) have excellent designs and scary enemies. Castle Dimitrescu looks incredible on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, with its gorgeous decorations and beautiful lighting. It's here where the player is stalked by Lady Dimitrescu and her daughters. The castle is followed by House Beneviento, which might be the scariest area in the game, due to the segment where the player has to hide from the baby monster. The house is followed by the Reservoir, where the player has to navigate tiny walkways as a terrifying sea monster glides beneath the water. It's the final area of the game that lets Resident Evil Village down.

Heisenberg's Factory is exactly what it sounds like; the player explores an abandoned factory, and the whole area is dimly lit and boring to look at. Its cyber-zombies feel out of step with the other creatures in the game, looking more like cyberpunk rejects than supernatural horrors. The most interesting enemy in this stage is the propeller-head monster, though even this design appears unoriginal, having been accused of plagiarizing a 2013 horror movie.

Heisenberg himself also feels out of place. The other three members of the Four Lords are all mutated in some way, yet Heisenberg is basically just Magneto from the X-Men franchise and lacks the monstrous nature of his fellows. His final transformation into the mech-suit monster - and the ridiculous RE Village chainsaw tank boss fight that follows - goes into the realm of silliness. The other domains of the Four Lords build up the tension gradually and have some genuine scares, while Heisenberg's Factory is just a dull slog with enemies that don't gel with the rest of Resident Evil Village.
