Warning: contains spoilers for Sonic the Hedgehog #9
It might not have been his intent, but Sonic the Hedgehog has become an unwitting partner in actually helping Dr. Eggman create the next ultimate weapon to defeat him and the Restoration.
The unintentional partnership began after Sonic and his companions Amy Rose and Tails stumbled upon a strange tower when investigating the source of some severe weather anomalies off the coast. Upon infiltrating the tower, the trio discovered that the evil mad scientist constructed it as a means to test out his latest inventions, and as Dr. Eggman's guests, they have essentially become unwitting test subjects.
Dr. Eggman has already tested out many of his latest diabolical inventions on Sonic and his friends throughout the tower's numerous, physics-defying rooms. The first was undoubtedly the most unnerving, though not as effective as it could have been, as the test transpired in an empty town filled with stuffed versions of Sonic's friends. From the main control room, two of Eggman's henchmen pulled the lever on a slot machine that combined random parts of preexisting Badniks before sending them on their way to fight the three intruders in the fake town.
After getting coerced into another area of the tower, Sonic now finds himself fighting against three elemental Badniks that Dr. Eggman is controlling remotely with a VR headset (and enjoying every minute of it), as of Sonic the Hedgehog #39 by Evan Stanley and Abby Bulmer. Ironically, the tower might have initially been a way for Eggman to identify the next best weapon to use against Sonic and his friends, but as the battle continues to unfold, it appears as though the test might actually eradicate his fast, blue nemesis on its own. Luckily for Sonic, two other Restoration allies who were not supposed to come with him snuck into the tower and are on their way to help.
Although an intriguing setup, the tests that Dr. Eggman has employed so far pale in comparison to the Metal Virus he unleashed upon Sonic's world a few issues back. The Metal Virus was so effective that it not only infected Sonic and transformed most of the population into robotic zombies, but got so out of hand that it required a plagued Sonic and Dr. Eggman to team up, especially when the so-called leader of the Deadly Six, Zavoc, took advantage of his ability where he can manipulate magnetics to control all of Dr. Eggman's robotic zombies. Everything now seems small and rather bland in comparison, although the creepy fake town added a small element of horror that the series hasn't seen since the Metal Virus. Even though these are all tests and Dr. Eggman likely won't use something that fails here, they are all just different versions of Badniks, which shows where Dr. Eggman's head is and proves that he's incapable of thinking outside the box. Hopefully, Dr. Eggman will realize this and go for a much bigger, grander scheme, that is, if Sonic and his friends survive.
