The Nevers: 10 Most Interesting Characters (So Far) | ScreenRant

HBO Max’s cyber-punk adventure, The Nevershas aired the first 6 of an eventual 12 episodes. The Nevers is about a group of people living in Victorian times who receive a bewildering array of superpowers following a mysterious event. Many are describing it as similar to the X-Men franchise, although, of course, the tone and setting are very different.

This streaming show, created by Joss Wheadon, has created a rich world with a fascinating set of characters that have left viewers ready for more of the series. Here are some of the most interesting figures that inhabit The Nevers

10 Primrose Chattoway

The character with the most obvious superpower is Primrose Chattoway, who dresses and speaks like a turn-of-the-century teenager even though she is now 12 feet tall.  Her impulsive actions and childish observations run contrary to the more serious activities of the other main characters.

Fans are eager to see how her powers eventually play into the story and hope to see her character continue to evolve in the narrative.

9 Hugo Swan

Playboy Hugo Swan is part of an old boys club - literally, and his actions reflect his dubious distinction. His push-pull relationship with various characters like Augie Bidlow and Inspector Mundi is still being fleshed out, leaving many unanswered questions about the role he will play in the series as it continues.

For instance, the audience has never been told that Swan isn’t one of the Touched. It's possible he may have powers yet to be revealed.

8 Myrtle Haplisch

Mundi and Amalia track down Maladie.

One of the first people rescued into the Orphanage for the Touched was Myrtle Haplisch. Interestingly, Haplisch can communicate key emotions in the series, even though no one understands exactly what she’s saying.

Although Myrtle has yet to display any useful superpowers, like Primrose, fans hope her story becomes dynamic.

7 Lord Gilbert Massen

The gruff Lord Massen seems to be the stereotypical Victorian English Lord, keen on furthering his interests and the power of his cabal of wealthy cohorts. Massen is dry and intelligent, verbally sparring with all who doubt him.

Massen is one of the few people who can recall the moment Londoners were touched, including the apparent death of his young daughter. However, just like Swan, he may have deeper, more sinister motivations to be revealed later.

6 Inspector Frank Mundi

Perhaps the most well-known actor in this ensemble is Ben Chaplin, who plays grizzled Inspector Frank Mundi. Ex-financé to Touched singer Mary Brighton, Mundi subverts the cliche of the relentless Scotland Yard bobby with his insight and avarice.

That Mundi could be an ally of the Touched and their leader Mrs. True, while still being manipulated by Lord Massen and Swan, makes him an interesting character.

5 Augustus “Augie” Bidlow

The character of Augie Bidlow seems to come straight from a Jane Austen novel, reminiscent of a Mr. Darcy in demeanor and mannerisms.  His banter with Penance Adair is one of the highlights of the series so far.

Bidlow is one of the few men in The Nevers that has been Touched, giving him the ability to control birds. What he does with these powers to the benefit or detriment of the other Touched people remains to be seen.

4 Penance Adair

Inventor Penance Adair is Mrs. True partner, and she can be counted on for intelligent banter and life-saving gadgets.  Her superpower - the ability to “see” energy fields like electricity - is a bit esoteric for an adventure story. Still, it gives the writers a wide range of latitude in solving story problems.

Actress Ann Skelly really leans into the character and her Irish roots, and her performance makes Ms. Adair an enjoyable character for viewers.

3 Dr. Horatio Cousens

Dr. Cousens is a critical character in The Nevers. He is one of the more educated characters in the story, a surgeon who’s been Touched with magical healing powers. While this seems like it would be a gift, ordinarily, during the Victorian era in which the story is based, this kind of power, and the desire to use it, comes with complications.

Dr. Cousens is definitely one of the characters fans hope to see more of in future episodes.

2 Maladie

Maladie's abilities - powers related to “gaining strength from pain” - seem ill-defined but help answer the question of what would happen if someone truly evil was given superpowers.  Her life before being Touched is only hinted at in The Nevers, but her perchance for evil behavior is on full display.

Though an antagonist, the story hints that Maladie may be more complicated than just a one-dimensional villain and could even play a key role in supporting the other Touched people in the story.

1 Amalia True

Thankfully for fans of the show, the most interesting character is lead Amalia True, who leads the quest of the Touched to find in their true calling.

Even though her motivations are currently foggy, scared widow to a powerful member of the Touched is intriguing. There is a certain compelling duality to True’s character, and it enriches her story throughout the first six episodes.
