10 Non-Disney Movies To Watch If You Like Raya And The Last Dragon

Raya and the Last Dragon is Disney's latest animated epic, and it is a true adventure from start to finish, as audiences watch the heroic Raya do everything in her power to find the last dragon, Sisu, in a bid to save the world and bring the separate tribes of Kumandra back together under one banner.

It's a movie that blends action, comedy, and heart together with a brilliant variety of characters who all have their own individual journeys. While there are plenty of other Disney movies that are similar to this, such as Moana or Mulan, there are also plenty of options outside of the Disney brand as well that shouldn't be ignored.

10 Labyrinth (Available To Stream On HBO Max)

Labyrinth is a terrific adventure and mystery movie - starring the brilliant David Bowie - that fans of Raya And The Last Dragon are sure to love. While the Disney movie has the sleekest animation possible, this one is all about using great practical effects to bring its characters and world to life.

The movie follows another strong female lead in Jennifer Connelly's Sarah, and just like Raya, she's on an adventure to save a family member - in this case, her brother. Along the way, through the maze, she encounters plenty of creatures (both good and bad), and the blend of huge personalities is something fans should enjoy watching.

9 Hook (Available To Stream On Netflix)

Another great live-action adventure that audiences will appreciate is Hook. This is the story of Peter Pan, which has been told countless times in a variety of ways, but this particular version stands out because of the great performances from Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman.

This fascinating take on the story sees Pan return to Neverland as an adult, trying to remember everything that happened in his childhood and act in the same way. Watching him fight for what he believes in and return to his carefree self is a great plot, and this is similar to Raya's journey, as she has to learn to trust in others.

8 Kubo And The Two Strings (Available To Stream On Fubo TV, FXNow, & DirecTV)

The animation in Raya And The Last Dragon is a big part of its appeal, and that is something that Kubo And The Two Strings also offers, albeit in a different way with its stunning stop-motion. It also has a similar story of a character fighting against an evil spirit that threatens society.

There's a family legacy in this story as well, with Kubo having to find his father's armor to defeat the spirit. Because of that element, there's a real emotional connection established with the audience. Meanwhile, the action that takes place throughout is equally gripping, which will remind viewers of the set pieces in Raya.

7 Epic (Available To Rent on Apple TV)

Epic is a classic story that fans love - loosely based on William Joyce's The Leaf Man and the Brave Good Bugs - and just like Raya and the Last Dragon, it's a true adventure into another world, which is exactly what made that Disney movie so engaging. In that tale, the focus was on dragons and mysticism, but in Epic, it is a wondrous woodland kingdom that takes center stage.

When Amanda Seyfried's Mary Katherine is shrunk and teleported into that world, she gets to learn a lot of lessons, just like Raya does from the people she encounters. With Epic also promoting themes of forgiveness and unity, this film and Raya work together well in a comedic and heartwarming pairing that fans will appreciate.

6 Over The Moon (Available To Stream On Netflix)

While Raya and the Last Dragon is all about mystical dragons, Over the Moon showcases space creatures, exploring another fantastic environment in a fun adventure. Raya's mission is to set off to try and find Sisu, but in this story, Fei Fei wants to go to the moon to meet a mystical goddess.

There's plenty of ups and downs along the journey, which is to be expected, and the variety of characters is something that feels similar between the two films. Above all else, the fact that Over the Moon features a similarly strong female character leading the way on another adventure truly makes this a great option for fans of Raya.

5 Sinbad: Legend Of The Seven Seas (Available To Stream On Hulu & Peacock Premium)

A swashbuckling pirate adventure with mystical characters and plenty of action is something that any fan of Raya And The Last Dragon is going to enjoy watching. Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas may be a much older animated movie, but it is still a brilliant one that holds up to this day.

In the film, Sinbad is forced to travel across the world in order to get the Book Of Peace after it is stolen and he gets framed. The adventure is one that pushes him to his limits - physically and emotionally - and it fills the story full of heart, just like Disney's latest installment in their animated canon.

4 Indiana Jones Franchise (Available To Stream On Paramount Plus)

It doesn't matter which of the Indiana Jones movies you pick from this franchise - fans of Raya And The Last Dragon will always be able to find some similarities. Of course, this series is live-action and features more serious subject matter, but it is another action adventure epic with real mystery placed into the heart of it.

Indiana Jones himself is a charismatic character who is full of wonder and belief like Raya, and he's able to pull off some great action in a bid to fight evil. Even if some of the story beats are bit more dark, there's still a lot to enjoy here if people are fans of Raya, from the jet-setting to the fighting.

3 Dora And The Lost City Of Gold (Available To Stream On Hulu, Epix, & DirecTV)

Dora The Explorer has always been a popular children's television show, but the decision to turn the character into a live-action one was a great call. In Dora and the Lost City of Gold, she sets off to find her parents, just like how Raya strives to do everything she can to bring her father back. Both films are focused on family first and foremost.

The movie has amazing adventure, and it is completely geared towards younger audiences. Dora is similar to Raya in that she is a true heroine who people can look up to and believe in, and with some fun sidekick characters to help out, this movie is one that fans of the Disney animation should love.

2 Avatar (Available To Stream On Disney+)

While Avatar is available on Disney+, this movie wasn't created by the company. Regardless, it is one that fans of Raya and the Last Dragon will enjoy. This is another epic that examines a totally unique world, with Pandora providing audiences with an entirely original environment to explore.

This setting in Avatar is vibrant and full of wonder, just as the different islands are in Raya and the Last Dragon. Here, they're also trying to teach the importance of peace and bringing worlds together - along with analyzing how fighting doesn't solve everything - which is what Raya's father is desperately trying to teach as well.

1 How To Train Your Dragon 2 (Available To Stream On Netflix)

While the entire How To Train Your Dragon franchise is great to watch for fans of Raya And The Last Dragon - simply due to their similar mythology and shared dragon-related subject matter - it is the second movie that stands out the most.

In that sequel, Hiccup and Toothless travel to different territories with the aim of bringing them all together and protecting them. It's a very similar tale to Raya's, and with the back and forth in the relationship between Hiccup and Toothless providing plenty of comedy and emotion, just like what we see from Raya and Sisu.
