The extraterrestrial element of Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead could utilize an unsolved mystery from Man of Steel. The zombie-heist movie is the first chapter in a growing franchise for Netflix, and one that will involve of both Area 51 and aliens in how the zombie outbreak comes about. The details are likely to become a lot more clear in the upcoming animated prequel series Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, but the franchise could also carry similar DNA to the biggest unanswered question from Man of Steel.
During the recent Netflix Geeked event, Zack Snyder referenced the mysterious open pod in the Kryptonian scout ship from Man of Steel while discussing the origins of the Alpha zombies in Army of the Dead. Describing the mystery of another Kryptonian besides Superman being on Earth as "a question I get all the time" from his fans, Snyder teased "I have a pretty good idea of who was in the creche," while also stating "I don't know if I'll ever say." The fact that Snyder brought this up during an Army of the Dead promo might offer a hint as to how aliens will play into the origins of the film's zombies.
With Man of Steel's open pod being in a ship that had been on Earth for 18,000 years before being discovered, the obvious implication is there's been a Kryptonian on Earth since it landed eons before Kal-El's arrival. Meanwhile, the details of Army of the Dead's aliens are more vague at the moment, other than Snyder's comments on Zeus originating from Area 51, and a pair of briefly seen UFOs in the sky in the movie's opening scene. However, the basic idea of Man of Steel's mystery Kryptonian from the open pod could be adapted for the origins of Army of the Dead's aliens.
The involvement of Area 51 indicates government research and experimentation right off the bat, and the idea of unearthed alien techonology or remains would fall right into the purview of that. Hypothetically, the arrival of aliens on Earth centuries or even millennia ago could be the distant origin of the zombies, with the government discovering a deceased or even living one, bringing the alien and its technology back to Area 51, and commencing the experiments that unleash the calamity of the film, which could end up being the origin shown in Lost Vegas. This could also explain the UFOs seen in the movie's opening, the aliens having possibly become aware of what the government is up to and returning to monitor their activities.
That fact that Snyder went back to Man of Steel's open pod while discussing Army of the Dead could also be a not-so-subtle hint that something along these lines might be in the works for Lost Vegas. By now, Snyder has made clear that the prequel series will delve into the origins of the outbreak, along with his frequent teases of the zombie's alien connections. Army of the Dead itself keeps its teases and worldbuilding subtle, but Snyder might have tipped his hat that, Zeus' origins in Area 51 aside, the aliens of Army of the Dead possibly made their way to Earth much further in the past than would be expected. If so, Army of the Dead's growing universe may end up borrowing the biggeest question mark from Man of Steel and repurposing it for its own story.
