Dancing With The Stars judge Derek Hough is revealing which celebrity partner would get him to return as a pro dancer. Over the years on the long-running reality competition series, Hough has paired up with such celebs as Jennie Garth, Brooke Burke, Nicole Scherzinger, Ricki Lake, Shawn Johnson, Kellie Pickler, Amber Riley and Bindi Irwin. He has made it to the finals several times and has won six Mirrorball Trophies. He has the best track record out of any professional dancer in the history of the show.
But Hough is now a judge on Dancing With The Stars. During season 29, he filled in for Len Goodman, who wasn't able to travel to the United States because of COVID-19 restrictions. Hough will stick around as a fourth judge alongside Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli when DWTS returns for its milestone 30th season.
Even though Hough is not competing on the dance floor anymore, he did recently say "never say never" when it comes to possibly returning as a Dancing With The Stars pro dancer in the future. The topic came up again during an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show. "It would have to be for the right partner," he admitted. When host Kelly Clarkson asked who that "right partner" would be, Hough replied, "I've always said Celine Dion."
Hough went on to share a funny story about the first time he met Dion, which was during his first season on Dancing With The Stars. The singer stopped by the studio to perform on the show. As Hough described it, "I was walking up the stairs. I was holding some shoes. And she was like, 'Derek Hough!' I'm like, 'Celine Dion knows my name.' I didn't know what to say, so I was like, 'I'm holding shoes.'" Hough then imitated Dion's response, which involved her singing to him, "Derek Hough is holding shoes, oh yeah." Hough couldn't believe what had just happened, explaining, "[She] did a turn and walked away. And I was like, 'The hell just happened, what?'" Hough also revealed that Dion later told him she sometimes dances at a dance class for a couple hours after her concerts.
Dion would be a great casting choice on the part of Dancing With The Stars. She is an iconic singer known for such hits as "Because You Loved Me," "It's All Coming Back To Me Now," "My Heart Will Go On" and many more. Over the past 18 years, Dion has headlined two residencies in Las Vegas, starting with her acclaimed A New Day... show at Caesars Palace. She'll be starting up a new mini-residency in Las Vegas in the fall. Anybody who has seen her concerts, whether in person or by watching a filmed version on DVD, knows how much work she puts into her shows. She clearly has the work ethic and energy to be able to compete on DWTS.
The competition series has cast celebrities with dance (and even gymnastic) experience before, which can help their chances, but ballroom routines aren't necessarily in their wheelhouse. The big question is whether Dion herself would want to compete on Dancing With The Stars. A reporter or talk show host should ask Dion about Hough's comments the next time she's interviewed.
