The Summer Game Fest 2021 kickoff event premiered the first gameplay trailer for Elden Ring, the upcoming RPG from Bandai Namco and FromSoftware. Originally announced at E3 2019, fans who were hoping for more information around the title were not disappointed. The trailer gave players a taste not only of the deep lore to come, but how players will be able to engage with the world.
In the story of Elden Ring, a Tarnished battles through the Lands Between to restore a shattered Elden Ring and become an Elden Lord. Bosses in Elden Ring are comprised of twisted, malicious demigods who possess shards of the ring that must be reclaimed. Combat and other gameplay features were prominent in the trailer, getting players excited about the fights to come.
There were several gameplay mechanics teased in the Elden Ring trailer, ranging from physical abilities to magical ones. The bulk of the roleplaying options in Elden Ring seem to stem from customizable playstyles, allowing players to curate their own experiences in-game. Players will be able to equip items and abilities that favor melee combat, stealth play, or any other gameplay path desired. Player skills will also be interchangeable, not dependent on a specific character class or weapon in order to create the most customizable player experience.
One of the most unique gameplay features is that players will be able to summon the spirits of slain enemies in Elden Ring to aid them in battle. Appearing as silver blue ghosts in the trailer, they will fight enemies alongside the Tarnished. These spirits will be collectible elements in the game for players to equip as needed. Their uses and abilities will be as varied as the rest of the gameplay elements in Elden Ring.
Weaponized combat is heavily featured in the trailer, unsurprising given the fantastic, medieval nature of the story and George R. R. Martin's involvement in crafting the narrative. While some of the weapons seem fairly standard for such a video game setting, such as a sword, an axe or spear, other weapons shown seem imbued with magical properties. These weapons show the path of the mage is available for players as well. It's unclear if the swords shown in the trailer were magically imbued before combat, or if their mystic enhancement was a result of a spell.
In addition to weapon enhancement, traditional magic seems to be an option. One scene in the trailer showcases the Tarnished hurling a fireball at an enemy during combat. Not much else is known about what magical abilities players will have, but it's safe to assume many more options will appear as game launch approaches. Multiplayer is also an option in Elden Ring for those inclined, allowing players with different abilities to party up and have a more robust plan of attack. It's not entirely clear in the trailer when or how the co-op function will be available, only that it exists. One thing is for sure - seeing all of gameplay options in Elden Ring in one furious battle will be a sight to behold.
