Here's every appearance by the Butter Robot in Rick And Morty. Adult Swim had a long, illustrious history with wild animated shows, including Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Robot Chicken, but Rick And Morty is their biggest hit to date. The show launched in 2013 and follows the titular grandfather and grandson duo on their various universe hopping adventures. Despite meeting an array of colorful characters and settings, it's decidedly not a kid's show.
Rick And Morty's quests often end in bloodshed, trauma or existential angst. It's a good thing the show is also hilarious and filled with quotable dialogue and memorable sequences. The series was something of a cult favorite during its first season but it later became a global phenomenon. It has aired for four seasons so far, spawned various video games and comics, and a fifth series is arriving shortly.
Rick And Morty also has a talent for creating great supporting characters, like Mr. Poopybutthole or Mr. Meeseeks. Butter Robot joined that distinguished line-up during the first season, and he's exactly what he sounds like. The first Rick And Morty Butter Robot episode was "Something Ricked Ths Way Comes." This sees Rick create the tiny sentient robot, who asks his creator "What is my purpose?" After Rick responds with "You pass the butter," the machine dutifully pulls over the butter dish - despite it being within reach of Rick.
After this, the Butter Robot restates what is its purpose, only to quickly realize passing butter is its entire function. It reappears a couple of times on this Rick And Morty episode, and later spurns Rick's attempt to connect with it when his grandkids are too busy. The robot later made an easter egg cameo on season 4's "The Old Man And The Seat," and can be seen in the traditional post-credit gag. This sees Jerry opening the fridge, where the Butter Robot can be seen off to the side.
The Butter Robot also made an appearance in a Rick And Morty Old Spice commercial, which saw Rick and three sentient tins of deodorant invade Morty's room to do a commercial. These cans wreck havoc and mess around with Morty's stuff, including a Plumbus and the Butter Robot. The ad doesn't end all that well for the luckless bot either, as one of the tins puts it in its mouth, implying it's about to eat it. The little robot has proven so popular that Adult Swim is creating a replica version that allows users to control it, speak to it and - yes - make it pass the butter to them.
