Shepard can keep several pets in Mass Effect Legendary Edition, including a Husk head, Space Hamster, and, of course, fish. Most of the left wall in Shepard's cabin contains a massive aquarium that can be stocked with exotic fish from across the galaxy. There are several fish species to collect in Mass Effect Legendary Edition, and Shepard can purchase them from vendors on Illium and the Citadel. Fish can be difficult to take care of, especially in Mass Effect 2. If they go too long without being fed, Shepard will need to clean out their dead companions and purchase replacements.
Collecting all species of fish for Shepard's aquarium in Mass Effect Legendary Edition does not come with any achievements or rewards, but many fans find it rewarding to complete their collection and keep their new friends alive for the duration of each game. Like the Model Ship collection in Shepard's cabin, the fish tank appears to be a reference to Star Trek: The Next Generation, as Captain Picard also has a tank in the ready room aboard the Enterprise, making it a fun Easter Egg for sci-fi fans. Shepard will want to save some extra credits to make sure they can keep their aquarium fully stocked with critters. Here's how to find and collect all fish for Shepard's aquarium in Mass Effect Legendary Edition.
There are only three fish to collect in Mass Effect 2, so it should be easy enough for Shepard to fill their aquarium. The trick in Mass Effect 2 is keeping the fish alive. They will need to be fed manually each time Shepard returns to the Normandy following a mission or assignment. In some cases, like Mordin's and Grunt's Loyalty Missions, Shepard can complete both, without returning to the Normandy in between, and their fish will live. If any fish die, Shepard will need to clear them out and purchase replacements from the same vendor, who will constantly restock their supply as needed.
Every fish species, and their location, appears below:
- Illium Skald Fish: Citadel Souvenirs; 500 credits (416 with discount)
- Thessian Sunfish: Citadel Souvenirs after Horizon; 500 credits (416 with discount)
- Prejek Paddle Fish: Memories of Illium; 8,000 credits (6,666 with discount)
To make feeding easier, and to protect the fish from the Collector attacks, Shepard should make sure to soft-romance Kelly Chambers. Once Shepard takes her to dinner, she can be asked to feed and take care of the fish, which she will do. Players should note that getting Kelly to help care for the fish is the only way for Shepard to complete their aquarium in Mass Effect 3.
To collect all fish species in Mass Effect 3, Shepard will need to make sure to visit Kanala Exports at the Presidium Commons. There are seven species to collect. Shepard can also purchase an automatic feeder from Elkoss Combine Arsenal Supplies to avoid needing to remember to feed them.
If Shepard asked Kelly to feed their fish in Mass Effect 2, she will take them and care for them while Shepard is grounded. Shepard can find her on the Citadel Docks taking care of refugees in Mass Effect 3, and she will return any fish Shepard had, including the Prejek Paddle Fish. While the other two species from Mass Effect 2 can be purchased elsewhere, this is the only way Shepard can obtain the Prejek Paddle Fish.
Every fish species, and their location, appears below:

- Thessian Sunfish: Kanala Exports; 1,000 credits (950 with discount)

If Shepard manages to keep the Prejek Paddle Fish alive from Mass Effect 2 through the end of Mass Effect 3 and plays with the same character a second time, they can receive a special Intel Bonus from Liara's Shadow Broker terminal. The player can choose between a 10% Weapon or Power Damage bonus.
Mass Effect Legendary Edition is available for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
