Mortal Kombat Co-Creator Has The Perfect DOOM & Returnal Crossover Name

Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon has devised the perfect name for a DOOM and Returnal crossover should it ever happen. While it's unlikely the two games would ever see a collaboration, players can always dream, and Boon's title is a perfect choice if iD Software and Housemarque decided to join forces to create the ultimate crossover experience.

Housemarque's PS5 exclusive released earlier this year, and despite controversy over Returnals's lack of autosave, the third-person roguelike has been another success for Sony. The game was praised for its clever gameplay and design, and is celebrated as one of the console's most difficult games. While DOOM Eternal isn't quite as challenging, it definitely enjoys punishing its players with gruelling gameplay on higher difficulties. The 2020 release offers high-octane FPS action only improved with the new-gen upgrade for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S gamers, released on June 29, 2021.

Ed Boon, co-creator of Mortal Kombat and lead programmer on the series appears to be a fan of both DOOM Eternal and Returnal, even going so far as to name a mashup of the two. The game developer shared a title suggestion for such a game, telling fans: "Someone should make a mashup of Returnal & Doom - DOOM RETURNAL!" Boon followed up the joke by adding: "Perhaps a sequel to DOOM ETERNAL?" While the wordplay makes for a great video game title, it seems an unlikely collaboration, especially now that Housemarque has been acquired by PlayStation, while the DOOM series is now owned by Microsoft.

PlayStation's acquisition of developer Housemarque comes as little surprise as the studio has not only shipped Returnal for PlayStation 5 but has also released a number of Sony console exclusives including Matterfall and Reso Gun. Announcing the news, Housemarque's Co-Founder and Managing Director Ilari Kuittinen said: "With the backing of SIE and its family of studios supporting us, we can truly grow into our place in the industry and show what Housemarque can create with no limitations." Meanwhile, Microsoft's acquisition of Bethesda parent company Zenimax Media was finalized earlier this year and celebrated with a number of Bethesda games added to Xbox Game Pass, including classics such as Fallout 4 and Skyrim. The buy-out means that future Bethesda games, such as the highly-anticipated RPG Starfield, will be Xbox console exclusives.

"DOOM Returnal" may be unlikely but the future is bright for both PlayStation and Xbox gamers. While Sony fans may be disappointed to miss out on upcoming Bethesda games, the acquisition of Housemarque hints at future exclusives for PS5 gamers. It's believed that this isn't the only recent studio buy-out, as it was accidentally revealed PlayStation may have purchased Bluepoint Games, developer of 2020's Demon's Souls PS5 remake. The news comes from a now-deleted tweet from PlayStation Japan, which is thought to have been shared instead of the Housemarque announcement. Sony is yet to comment on the leak.
