The recent release of MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries on Xbox Game Pass has introduced many new pilots to the legendary mech sim series, and now those console players can battle with PC players thanks to the addition of crossplay. Xbox has a long history with the MechWarrior franchise thanks to MechAssault, two arcade mech games that provided some of the initial interest in Xbox Live alongside Halo 2 and Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge. The addition of MechWarrior 5 to Xbox's streaming service can be considered a coming home moment for the series, especially now that the entire player base can link up and destroy one another online once again.
The teaser trailer for MechWarrior's crossplay multiplayer launched during today's PC Gaming Show as a part of the ongoing E3 activities. As part of a new update, players across Steam, GOG, and Xbox platforms (both PC and console) can now mix it up in multiplayer matches. The game launched fairly recently into Game Pass on both PC and console, meaning that it's a quick download away for Xbox's massive subscriber base. That should solidify the multiplayer population of the game across all PC platforms and ensure that there's plenty of Grasshopper on Thunderbolt action to be had in the months to come.
It is worth noting that the trailer does not mention the Epic Games Store, which was the initial home of MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries for a full year as part of Epic's ongoing exclusivity deals. Despite this, the game does also support players on Epic joining in on the fun, so there's no impediment for any mech warriors who want to play MechWarrior together.
