Nightwing Variant Cover Gives His Dog Sidekick Her Own Costume

Nightwing has been paving his own way in his self-titled series, but his canine companion Haley has still managed to outshine him. Already two issues of Nightwing have sold out and gone back for a secondary printing. Now, Nightwing #78 is going back to the presses for a third time, warranting a new cover.

Nightwing #78 marked the debut of Haley, a stray dog that Dick Grayson picks up off the street. This adorable canine companion had her name selected by DC's fans in a fan-vote. However, Haley has two names thanks to Robin, with the second being Bitewing. That alternate name is finding a good use - as a secondary identity.

On Twitter, Jessica Chen - an editor at DC Comics - revealed the variant cover that will be present on Nightwing #78's third printing. This cover by artist Riley Rossmo features Haley front and center, taking a nap. This nap features a really awesome dream - Haley being not just a canine companion for Dick Grayson, but a pet sidekick to Nightwing. This is where her secondary moniker comes into play since being a crime-fighting pet would allow her to have an alter ego. She could fight crime at night as Bitewing.

This cover is utterly adorable. It is also incredibly fitting considering that this issue is Haley's debut. Nightwing #78 features Nightwing saving her from a bunch of bullies who were prepared to shoot her. Since this issue, she has had a home with Dick and just like he fell in love with her, fans have too. Although she's largely been in the background in the past couple issues, she always steals the show in her small moments. Now, she's stealing the show from Nightwing himself. The first two printings of this issue both solely featured Nightwing on the covers. He is now sharing the spotlight as Haley dreams about joining her new owner as a hero. The best part is that she actually gets her own matching costume! It comes complete with a belt full of pouches, wings, and even the Nightwing logo across the front.

Haley is the latest animal sidekick to join DC's ranks. Superman has Krypto and Batman has Ace, but they'll both have to move over to make room for this cutie. She hasn't saved the day the way they have been shown doing in various media, but she has only just arrived on the scene. Considering how much love she's getting already and how eager she is to fight crime, it wouldn't be entirely surprising if she someday actually got some time on the canine hero circuit. She certainly would look the part if she got to wear her new Bitewing uniform. The third wave of Nightwing #78 with Haley's cover will be available for purchase on July 27, 2021. Nightwing's canine sidekick is one of the best parts of this issue and she should definitely get to be on more covers in the future.
