Zach Galifianakis voices a malfunctioning robot friend in a new trailer for Ron’s Gone Wrong. Initially announced in 2017 by 20th Century Fox, Ron’s Gone Wrong will be the first theatrical release from the U.K.-based studio Locksmith, described as a "high-end CG feature animation studio" created to rival Pixar. After Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Studios, the Mouse House will handle Ron’s Gone Wrong release. Though its release has been shuffled around a few times, it is now set to open worldwide on October 22, 2021.
Directed by Pixar alum Jean-Philippe Vine and Locksmith co-founder Sarah Smith, Ron’s Gone Wrong follows a shy middle-schooler named Barney (Jack Dylan Grazer) and his new walking, talking, digitally-connected device, Ron (Galifianakis). Set against the backdrop of social media, Barney and his new robot companion embark on an emotional, action-packed journey in which Ron learns how to be human, and Barney learns the true meaning of friendship. The CG animated film features a star-studded voice cast that includes Olivia Colman, Ed Helms, Justice Smith, and Rob Delaney.
Now, in honor of Best Friend’s Day, 20th Century Studios has released the first trailer for Ron’s Gone Wrong. It starts seemingly as a commercial for highly advanced robot companions called B-Bots, but then quickly cuts to Barney receiving one as a belated birthday gift. Though Barney’s new B-Bot is supposed to be his “Best Friend out of the Box,” Ron quickly begins hilariously malfunctioning. Watch the first trailer for Ron’s Gone Wrong below:
Before the pandemic, the Locksmith-animated film was scheduled for a November 2020 release, but it was hit with various delays. Now that it will be released after the pandemic, the narrative might be recontextualized with some additional resonance in light of the recent isolation experienced due to lockdowns and quarantines. The film’s director Sarah Smith says the film is about the importance of real-life connections in an age of technology, “The bad guy of the film says, ‘Stay home, stick to your screens, you don’t need to see each other.’ Of course, for most kids, they desperately need to see each other,” Smith says. “So, in a way, our film became more poignant.”
Galifianakis made a name for himself with live-action comedies like The Hangover trilogy and Due Date. Still, he has shown his talent as a voice performer in The Lego Batman Movie as Joker and the bigfoot Mr. Link in Missing Link. Now, his clumsy and mischievous robot Ron seems like an amalgam of animated characters like Baymax from Big Hero 6 and the Minions from Despicable Me. Galifianakis’ titular robot from Ron’s Gone Wrong might be the next beloved animated novelty character when the film debuts this fall.
