Cast members of The Suicide Squad only got scripts with the story up until their deaths in the film. The upcoming James Gunn directed soft-reboot is set to debut on August 6 in theaters and on HBO Max and just about everyone involved has promised a take on the titular team-up that ups the ante. 2016's David Ayer directed Suicide Squad failed to capture viewers' interest despite being a box office success. This was due, in part, to the fact that it's PG-13 rating led to a limitation on the violence and mayhem that was part and parcel of the supervillain group.
At the time, DC also seemed hesitant about losing any characters that could potentially pop up in other, bigger DCEU films. Gunn has promised an about-face on this aspect, too, noting that many of The Suicide Squad's characters will die in the upcoming film. While characters like Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn and John Cena's Peacemaker seem relatively safe, Gunn has rounded out his massive cast with obscure and hilarious villains that could be killed off without having much impact on the larger franchise.
With James Gunn continuing to reveal tidbits about The Suicide Squad on Twitter, the director opened up about the cast and whether or not they knew the ending of the movie. Up until recently, many hadn't seen or even read the ending of the film. This is because the actors were only given scripts that had the story up until the deaths of their characters. Now, with The Suicide Squad in the can, most of the cast has seen the ending of the film, revealing what happens beyond their deaths.
This level of secrecy is not unprecedented. In such a major franchise film, studios like to keep as much under wraps as possible. Still, it's interesting that Gunn and Warner Bros. have kept the ending of The Suicide Squad so secret. Could that point to the film playing a major part in the future of the DCEU? It certainly seems so. The new trailer for The Suicide Squad already hinted at major connections to the larger franchise.
At the beginning of the clip, Viola Davis' Amanda Waller can be heard saying that Bloodsport, played by Idris Elba, put Superman in the ICU with a Kryptonite bullet. While the comment could be a one-off statement, it sounds like The Suicide Squad may be even more connected to the larger DCEU than originally thought. What that means for the film's ending remains to be seen, but it's clear that the surviving villains of the film will survive for a reason, something that will likely be revealed in due time.
