In the world of Marvel Comics and in the manga that is My Hero Academia, Thanos and All Might are two powerhouse characters with nary a rival that can match their strength, durability and determination in coming out on top. But for fans, these two icons will most likely never be able to cross franchise lines to canonically trade blows and slap each other down with abandon, once and for all giving readers a decisive answer as to who would triumph in a winner take all fight.
Taking into account each of their power sets, their past actions, battles, wins, losses and anything and everything in between, it seems like these two are on relatively even footing when it comes to their hypothetical matchup. Yet there can be only one winner left standing when the dust settles, and now it’s time to find out who it could be!
Being the former number one hero that nearly every person in My Hero Academia’s superhero filled world looks up to and idolizes, All Might is a character that embodies the hopes and dreams of everyone around him. Acting as the Holy Grail that many fledgling heroes aspire to, All Might may be on the downslide as of late as his powers have been slowly leaving him ever since he passed his quirk down to his apprentice, Midoriya aka Deku, but it can’t be denied that the guy packs one hell of a punch when needed, and can take down villains that constantly put him between a rock and a hard place seemingly without effort.
Commanding the quirk of One For All which allows him to harness the immense power passed down from generation to generation, All Might has been known to push himself past his upper limits (Plus Ultraaa!) to achieve the impossible, often succeeding in ways no one thought possible nor probable. Complete with his ultimate attack in the powerful and iconic one-shot punch known as United States of Smash, All Might also has access to other powerful yet similar attacks to beat down his foes, as well as the speed, durability and smarts to overcome all odds set before him.
Snatcher of life, villain to all in the Marvel universe and the one guy responsible for snapping away half of all life in the universe, Thanos is basically a god-tier baddie in all but name. Capable of brandishing his might with or without his usual reality altering accessory known as the Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos has gone toe-to-toe with some of Marvel’s greats and is very rarely taken down by a singular hero; most of the time needing a whole team just to give him a something other than a flesh wound to complain about.
Powerful in a wide range of different ways, Thanos has a punch that can shatter bones, a sense of combat awareness that is unrivaled in the field and untold levels of durability which allows him to withstand the pull of a black hole, an onslaught of attacking superheroes at their most powerful and even a full blast from the mouth of the overpowered Inhuman known as Black Bolt; an attack that would utterly decimate any other character, yet when blasted with it point blank in the face, Thanos barely even registers the hit. Known to be closely related to the nigh-immortal beings called Eternals, Thanos is at the top of the list when it comes to overpowered Marvel characters, and is only getting stronger by the day since he rarely allows himself to fall behind the heroes he fights on a consistent basis.
So now with both All Might and Thanos' powers and abilities matched up and compared, who would win in this exciting battle for the ages? Despite their similar power sets and the fact that they’re usually at the top of their game in nearly every way imaginable, this bout’s title belt would have to go to the Mad Titan himself, Thanos; but not for lack of trying on All Might’s end.
Though not overly more powerful when compared to All Might on his own, Thanos is an intellectual genius when it comes to waging battles, and the same weakness that All Might has in the manga in regards to his powers not being at the level they once were, is a crack in All Might’s armor that wouldn’t take Thanos long to figure out. Evenly matched throughout, the second Thanos realizes his opponent is losing his strength, speed and endurance, Thanos would easily move in for the kill shot, bringing new meaning to his Mad Titan name as he pummels All Might with a kind of rage that's unrivaled across comics. And although All Might could quite possibly take Thanos down with a well placed United States of Smash, Thanos has proven time and time again that he can withstand the attacks of some of Marvel’s most powerful heroes like Thor, Wolverine or Hulk, giving All Might a slim chance to come out on top, but ultimately not having enough raw power to put Thanos away for good.
So while it might be an extremely close call as to who would come out on top in this hypothetical comic battle (unless Thanos has access to the Infinity Gauntlet after which he’d probably win without breaking a sweat), Thanos’ endurance, durability and matching level of power in regards to All Might’s own would most definitely be enough to eek out a win despite it being a hard fought battle all around. My Hero Academia’s All Might might be the number one hero in a lot of fans’ eyes, but with the downward spiral of his powers as of late essentially making All Might less and less of a worthy combatant as the match goes on, Marvel’s Thanos could easily give him the knockout blow when he’s at his weakest, once and for all putting to rest which character would win in a comic fight.
