The Bachelor: Contestants Who Were Almost The Lead | Screen Rant

The fight to become The Bachelor is always a tense one. Whenever a season of The Bachelorette wraps up, all eyes are on the men, as the fans try to figure out who will reign supreme and be given their chance to find love. While there seems to be a formula that Bachelor Nation producers like to follow - e.g. the lead is usually the runner-up, or someone who had a devastating breakup - when Matt James was chosen, all the rules were thrown out. Matt James was completely new to Bachelor Nation, and his only tie to the franchise was being best friends with Tyler Cameron, and Mike Johnson had a few things to say about that.

Becoming The Bachelor is not only a way for previous contestants to find love, but also a way for them to shine on their own and create a following. There have been many contestants who have turned down the role of The Bachelor because they were not ready or did not want that kind of scrutiny, or they did not agree with the producers of the show. Meanwhile, some tried to meddle before the ink had even dried on the contract. Alas, a lot goes into being the lead of The Bachelor, and not everyone is cut out for it.

Peter Kraus was introduced to Bachelor Nation when he appeared on Rachel Lindsay’s season of The Bachelorette. The two shared one of the most devastating breakups, which led to Rachel’s eyelash extensions on the floor. At the time, viewers were upset at their breakup, but they were ready to see Peter stepping into the role of The Bachelor and embarking on his own journey to find love. During After The Final Rose, however, Rachel told Peter, “This process is not for you” - and she was right. Peter wanted to date Rachel at the end of the process but not commit to an engagement, which she did not agree with.

While Peter was indeed in talks with producers to be the lead for the next season of The Bachelor, they could not get on the same page. According to E!, Peter wanted to spend more time with the women, even when the cameras were not rolling, so he could see them in their environment. Peter also asked for a counselor when he had to reach the top five and top four. But the producers and Peter could not get on the same page, and they eventually went with race car driver Arie Luyendyk Jr. instead.

Mike Johnson had a strong following after he appeared on Hannah Brown’s season of The Bachelorette. Many fans hoped that he would be the next man to step into The Bachelor's shoes, but ultimately that went to Peter Weber, who had probably one of the most confusing and chaotic seasons ever. On The Bachelor Happy Hour podcast, Mike revealed: “When I first found out, I am not gonna lie, I was sad. I was annoyed when I very first found out.” However, Mike later added that he was appreciative that they told him.

On the other hand, when Matt James was chosen as the first Black Bachelor, Mike Johnson had a few things to say. First and foremost, Mike was confused as to why they did not choose someone within the franchise, as he had been on The Bachelorette and Bachelor In Paradise. He extended his congratulations on Instagram, and then said on the Almost Famous podcast: "Honestly, it is what it is. They picked a great guy and for like 30 minutes I was butt hurt but after that, you move on with life.” Mike then added, "I know I'm an amazing human being and an amazing person, so, therefore, I'm not going to let a few executive producers who didn't choose me twice make me feel any type of way."

Chase McNary was a finalist on Jojo Fletcher’s season, but Jojo ended up picking Jordan Rogers in the end. Chase was in serious talks with Bachelor Nation producers to becoming the next lead of The Bachelor. During Jojo’s season, he was a frontrunner from the start and a popular choice to be the next lead in the franchise. Chase was open to the idea of having his chance to find love, had many rounds of conversations with producers, and even signed a few contracts. However, it never came to be.

In an interview with Us Weekly from 2o16, Chase McNary was rather confused and said, “I went through the negotiations, I accepted the offer, I signed the contract." Despite this, it never came to fruition, and Chase did not even receive an explanation as to why they went with Nick Viall instead. "I talked to my family and friends about being the Bachelor. It was the Monday before they announced it that they told me I was not the Bachelor. So, I found out with the rest of the world that it was Nick."

Luke Pell was also on Jojo’s season of The Bachelorette and was reportedly ready to give out roses of his own on The Bachelor. In fact, Luke went as far as signing contracts. However, before any official announcement, Luke was using his supposed Bachelor title to win women over, promising women that they would be his final pick. This did not go well for him, particularly when he started to talk to blogger Airelle Snyder and things started to hit it off for them.

Luke convinced Airelle to apply for season 21 and told her that he was surely going to become The Bachelor, and that their relationship would transition on the show. Airelle even went for the final casting, but Luke was not chosen as The Bachelor. Airelle aired all of this behind the scenes meddling on her YouTube channel, and it was found out that Luke had been doing this to a few other girls and encouraged them to apply so they could have their relationships play out onscreen. But when producers caught on to what he was doing, Luke was dropped ever so quickly. As previously mentioned, the honor of becoming The Bachelor lead on that season ended up going to Nick Viall.
