Tick, Tick... Boom! Trailer: Andrew Garfield Sings In Lin-Manuel Miranda Musical

Netflix has shared the first official trailer for Lin-Manuel Miranda's directorial debut Tick, Tick... Boom! starring Andrew Garfield. The movie musical adapts Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Jonathan Larson's autobiographical stage show of the same name. The Rent genius poured his heart into the pop-rock musical, which follows Jon, a struggling theatre composer waiting tables in New York City while hoping to write the next great musical.

Fellow Pulitzer-winner Miranda has always credited Larson as his biggest musical theatre influence. The Hamilton creator even starred as Jon in a 2014 revival of Tick, Tick... Boom! at Encores! Off-Center. He's always wanted to make his directorial film debut with the show, a dream that was cemented in 2018. A year later, it was announced that Netflix secured the sought-after film rights with Oscar nominee Andrew Garfield said to be playing Jon.

Fans got their first good look at Garfield and his star-studded cast members when Netflix released the first trailer for Tick, Tick... Boom! on June 10. The streaming giant aptly distilled the film into the phrase "one man's race against time to create something extraordinary." The essence of time is certainly prevalent in the clip. Watch the first full trailer below:

The trailer immediately puts viewers in a musical state of mind with Garfield's Jon tapping out a beat on a friend's shoulder. He and his party attendees are soon singing "Boho Days," a song that existed in the original incarnation of the stage show, but was cut from the final version. Alexandra Shipp (X-Men: Apocalypse), Tony Award nominee Robin de Jesús, Tony Award nominee Joshua Henry, and musical movie queen Vanessa Hudgens are all seen in the opening portion.

As the trailer ticks on, Jon's race against time picks up. More of the film's glittering players like MJ Rodriguez are seen. Emmy Award winner Bradley Whitford, Tariq Trotter, and Emmy and Tony Award winner Judith Light round out the cast. Although Miranda isn't seen, his presence is made clear in the trailer with his name and logos for Hamilton and In the Heights flashing onscreen.

The teaser's finale reveals that Tick, Tick...BOOM! will blast onto Netflix this fall. Between the powerhouse players both on and off-screen, which also includes Dear Evan Hansen writer Steven Levenson, the production is certainly set up to honor Larson's legacy. Musical theatre fans can breathe easy knowing that the film adaptation is in the hands of fellow theatre people. Not to mention that fall 2021 is a fitting premiere date, as Broadway itself will begin to shine its great lights once again.
