Why The Kaminoans Made Omega The Same Way As Boba Fett (Was It Jango?)

Omega’s full origin has been revealed in Star Wars: The Bad Batch, but why did the Kaminoans make her an unaltered Jango Fett clone like Boba? As explained in The Bad Batch season 1, episode 9, “Bounty Lost,” Omega is the last of two pure genetic replicas of the Mandalorian bounty hunter Jango Fett. Whether intended or not, Omega is also the first (and likely only) female clone of Fett. Omega is key to the Kaminoans’ plot against the Empire, and while the full extent of it is unknown, they’ve revealed that an unaltered clone can be used as a new clone template. Given the fighting prowess of the Republic’s clone troopers, the Kaminoans, understandably, want to produce more clones based on Jango Fett.

Jango Fett was the galaxy’s greatest bounty hunter in the years preceding the Clone Wars. Jango’s legendary skills and discretion led Darth Tyranus (Count Dooku) to select him as the clone template for the Republic’s Clone Army. Unlike his Legends counterpart, Jango was uninvolved and largely apathetic to the Republic’s Clone Troopers, but he did demand an unaltered clone to raise as a son. This clone, designated “Alpha” at first, was renamed Boba. As an adult, Boba Fett would eventually succeed Jango as the galaxy’s most skilled mercenary.

While it’s been revealed that Omega is an unaltered Jango Fett clone, like Boba, it’s unclear why the Kaminoans created a second pure genetic Jango replica. Given Jango Fett’s independent nature and mercenary vocation, the Kaminoans might have planned for his eventual departure or death. Omega may have been specifically made as a backup clone template. If this is the case, it was a wise choice by the Kaminoans, as Jango was killed minutes before the Battle of Geonosis began, leaving them with a finite supply of his DNA to use for more clone troopers. By the time the Republic became the Galactic Empire, they may have fully expended their supply of the late Jango’s DNA.

There’s also a notable detail in Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones: Kaminoan Prime Minister Lama Su describes Jango’s demand for an unaltered clone as “curious” when showcasing the Republic clone troopers. Given her age (and lack of growth acceleration) in The Bad Batch, Omega must have been alive at that time, so Lama Su’s words imply that she was being kept secret from the Jedi, the Republic, and potentially Jango Fett himself. Another fascinating extrapolation is that Jango’s demand for an unaltered clone inspired the Kaminoans to create one for themselves.

While creating a backup template for Jango clones was, ultimately a wise decision, it’s not entirely successful. Omega was given neither military training nor a position within the Republic Clone Army, but she nevertheless retained her host’s curiosity and independence. This led her to desert the fledgling Empire, along with Clone Force 99, which is creating a costly effort by the Kaminoans to recapture her. Like her “father,” Jango, and her “brother,” Boba, Omega is free-thinking and almost impossible to control, which is hindering whatever contingency plan that the Kaminoans have for their Imperial clients in Star Wars: The Bad Batch.
