In Dragon Age: Origins, the first game of the Dragon Age franchise, and the best one to start with for new players, powers split off into two main categories: Talents, which are used by Warriors and Rogues, and spells, which are used by Mages. Some of the talents are unique only to specific specializations, while others require the use of certain weapons.
With over 200 unique talents and spells to choose from, it can seem like a daunting task to find the best ones to use for each class. However, some really manage to stand out and are considered great options in almost every build.
10 Warrior: Threaten
With the Warrior class being considered the best option for tanking, especially with sword and shield variations, Threaten is a must-have talent for this method of gameplay.
This talent increases the threat generated by the warrior with each attack, thus making the enemies prioritize targeting him. It is a solid option since the warrior wants to take the aggro in order to protect the other, more squishy classes in the player's party.
9 Warrior: Taunt
Taunt works similar to Threaten, with the main difference being that Taunt is an active skill that immediately forces all nearby enemies to attack the warrior.
It is often considered a more consistent option since it can be activated at will, and instantly at the beginning of a fight, so that enemies won't even have the first few seconds to target anyone else. Combined with a tanky warrior build, Taunt is an essential tool.
8 Warrior: Shield Wall
Shield Wall and its upgrades of Shield Expertise and Shield Mastery are great tools for any Warrior that hopes to be tanking in the front lines with Taunt or Threaten.
Shield Walls allows warriors who have taken the aggro from most enemies to survive because it provides increased resistance to damage and knockdown effects at the cost of slightly reducing a player's damage. Shield Wall is even recommended as part of some of the best Warrior builds in Dragon Age: Inquisition.
7 Warrior: Indomitable
The Indomitable trait is one of the more offensive options in the Warrior talent line since although it offers knockdown immunity, its main asset is the increased damage it offers.
It is often used in combination with 2-handed Warrior builds in order to maximize damage, and can be a great help as it offers both power and survivability, two of the best assets for almost every Warrior build.
6 Rogue: Momentum
Momentum is a Rogue and Warrior talent (which is used primarily in Rogue) that significantly decreases the user's attack animation time by 30%. What this means is that the user's attack will simply cast faster, thus allowing for more damage in less time.
In short, this talent is considered one of the best in the game as it can singlehandedly increase the player's DPS significantly. Especially when used with Zevran, one of the most likable characters in the series, in an assassin-focused build, this talent really shines.
5 Rogue: Lethality
Lethality is a Rogue talent that, as its name suggests, makes the user's attacks more lethal by increasing their critical chance strike.
In concert with the Rogue class, which already has significantly high damage and solid critical chance, this can increase its total damage by a huge amount. In short, Lethality is a must-have for all Rogue builds that favor an assassin gameplay that focuses on maximizing damage dealt.
4 Rogue: Coup De Grace
Coup De Grace is a great talent option for assassin-focused Rogues since it allows the user to backstab any enemy that is stunned, feared, frozen, or immobilized by any other status effects, thus doubling their total damage output.
Coup De Grace can be a great combo when combined with skills like Mage's Cone of Cold, which freezes all enemies in front of the caster, thus allowing the Rogue to efficiently backstab them all.
3 Mage: Heal
Heal is an extremely essential asset to have in almost every fight and should be gained as early as possible. Since it heals the entire party, it allows the player not to have to carry and constantly health pots.
A common strategy, at least for higher difficulties where having heal is vital, is to have two mages, each with heal, and each with it on auto tactics so that the player can minimize the risk of dying.
2 Mage: Fireball
Mage is thought to be the best class in Dragon Age: Origins and Fireball is considered by most players as one of the best spells in the game. It targets a large area of effect, deals solid damage, and knockdowns enemies.
On top of that, it has a very short cooldown, which makes it the bread and butter of the Mage spells. It is considered as one of the best ways for clearing background units like archers and other ranged units that shoot projectiles from afar.
1 Mage: Cone Of Cold
If Fireball is the best fire spell, Cone of Cold is the best ice option. Its primary asset is that it freezes all enemies hit, thus giving the player's party a lot of space and time to set up a proper attack.
Further to that, Cone of Cold can deal substantial damage when combined with the combination mechanic of Shattering. Through this combo, Mage's can often even one-shot an entire group of enemies without giving them the chance to fight back.
