Fans are wanting to know more about Ehrlich Ocampo's leviwand from America’s Got Talent. Ehrlich came to AGT and the judges didn’t know what his performance would consist of. He introduced himself, saying he gave up everything to be a performer, and came to the show with encouragement from his friends and family.
Ehrlich, also known as Firechill, came all the way from The Philippines to audition. According to Ehrlich's Instagram, he does magic, dance, and acrobatics, and will perform with the Circus Conelli in Zurich in 2022. In 2019, he introduced the first Leviwand act to Cirque du Soleil, where another America's Got Talent season 16 contestant has performed, and he has brought his unique performing style to The World Festival of the Circus of Tomorrow.
In addition to the leviwand, he also spins poi balls, tumbles, and practices aerial hoop. As of 2020, he teaches leviwand training courses for those interested in learning. He made a splash on the show and when the lights turned off, the AGT judges were captivated as Ehrlich unveiled his secret weapon.
The Leviwand has been used as early as the 1800s. The official Leviwand Dance website says it’s often called the "Dancing Cane" and is described as “a versatile prop that lets you express yourself through movement as you mesmerize others with magic.” Its name is short for "levitation wand" and while it appears to be floating next to the performer, it is actually attached to a string maneuvered by the performer’s hand. The device is a stick with a thread in the middle which is connected to the practitioner, making Ehlrich seem like an AGT magic act, rather than just a dancer. Experts say physics is what allows it to remain upright while it is in use, therefore making it appear as if it is levitating.
Ehlrich has been practicing leviwand since 2013. Ehlrich has talked about it on Instagram, calling it, “Love at first flow.” He says his style has specific configurations and precision moves, integrating illusion, movement, dance, and acrobatic techniques. He has demonstrated himself being able to balance it on one finger and even with the gadget on fire.
For his America’s Got Talent appearance, Ehlrich used both a wand and a glowing hula hoop. When his audition ended, all four judges were on their feet with AGT judge Howie Mandel telling him, “You’re amazing buddy.” All the judges agreed they had never seen anything like his performance on the show, even Howie who has been judging since season 5. He earned a yes from the entire judging panel, who called his act special, beautiful, and flawless.
With his training in multiple circus arts, no one can tell if Ehlrich’s leviwand will make a return or if he’ll switch over to something new the next time fans see him. Despite his being on America’s Got Talent, he surely has a career ahead of him with his success in the circus. One thing is for sure; his extraordinary act gives America's Got Talent viewers a good reason to tune in.
