Army of the Dead: Who the Snyder Cut Easter Egg Actually Belonged To

Zack Snyder is having a big year, with the release of both the near-mythical Snyder Cut of Justice League and the Netflix smash hit Army of the Dead on Netflix, the latter of which included a cameo of the former, shown as a collection of film reels in the Las Vegas vault. Ironically, the Snyder Cut is in an imaginary version of the vault during the mission planning scene montage, but whose imagination is it?

The Easter egg prop itself actually had a role in the Snyder Cut campaign, as Zack Snyder posted a photo of it to social media to "prove" the Snyder Cut existed back in 2019. Ironically, since nobody knew there would be a Snyder Cut cameo in Army of the Dead, it was presumed to be the actual Snyder Cut film reels at the time, although there had already been plenty of evidence the Snyder Cut existed at that point.

The movie doesn't give any obvious indication of who the Snyder Cut film reels belong to, since different parts of the montage could have been imagined by any members of the team, but the answer is revealed by production designer Julie Berghoff in the book Army of the Dead: A Film by Zack Snyder: The Making of the Film by Peter Aperlow: "We created the safe, along with things that Tanaka had collected along the way, his artwork and things he kept in there, almost as a personal safe. So, when you open it there are all these little surprises about his character and his hobbies."

The only things other than money seen in the vault during the movie are the "Justice League Director's Cut" film reels and some golden AK-47s, meaning Berghoff is likely referring to the Snyder Cut when she says "artwork," and also that Tanaka might be a massive Zack Snyder fan if it's meant to "inform his character and hobbies." Making Tanaka the one with the Snyder Cut is a funny twist as Guzman (Raul Castillo) or Dieter (Matthias Schweighofer) would be seen as more likely candidates by most people. However, it's not clear if the Snyder Cut was also released in the Army of the Dead universe or if it's not released and Tanaka has the reels and is, therefore, the one refusing to release it. If it's the latter scenario, then it may not be meant to convey that he's a big Zack Snyder fan, but the opposite.

Ironically, the Easter egg was put in the movie before there were any plans for the Snyder Cut to be released, so if there's any intended meaning outside of being a fun wink, then it would have been crafted in an entirely different context since Zack Snyder's Justice League is on HBO Max now. Regardless of who it belongs to, however, it's probably not quite as important to the characters having to worry about fighting off zombies, but just like Scott has dreams of opening a food truck, maybe Tanaka has dreams of releasing (or not) the Snyder Cut.
