Battlefield 2042 is looking to truly deliver on the series' signature sandbox combat with its new Portal mode, where remastered classic maps and weapons can be used in customizable games. Experiences (what Battlefield 2042 is calling its player-created Portal game modes) can be used to pit different Battlefield eras against each other. The four included game eras are Battlefield 1942, Bad Company 2, BF3, and 2042. The reveal trailer for Portal sparked the imagination in regards to what will be possible in the Experiences by depicting an absurd showdown between the Wehrmacht from Battlefield 1942 and the modern day American soldiers of Battlefield 3.
A group of World War II-era German soldiers look confused to find themselves in a field and equipped with only knives before they are charged by their opponents, modern Americans whose only weapons are medical defibrillators. Defibrillators have long been in the Battlefield series, usually used by the Medic and Assault classes to revive fallen comrades, a mechanic made partially obsolete by Battlefield V and 2042's Squad Revive. Battlefield's emphasis on player agency has meant that defibs can also used for the exact opposite purpose: taking out opposing players.
The Battlefield 3 soldiers appear to have a tough time against those from 1942, mostly because it's quite difficult to actually get a kill with a defibrillator in Battlefield. An attack with a defibrillator typically has to be very precise and at extremely close range. A more fair match-up would probably be the defibrillator of Battlefield 3 against its counter-part in Bad Company 2.
Although it could be argued that Battlefield used to be more realistic, it has never been much of a military sim. So far, Battlefield 2042's marketing - including the new Portal mode trailer - has emphasized the wild gameplay that produces the series' signature "only in Battlefield" moments. Soldiers were shown ramping explosive-laden vehicles into enemy aircraft, the classic Battlefield 3 RendeZook moment was immortalized cinematically, and now a whole team of Medics have forsaken their purpose for defibrillator violence.
These sort of antics perfectly capture the potential of Battlefield Portal. Developer Ripple Effect is putting these creation tools in the hands of players to deliver fun and inventive new ways to play Battlefield, not to deliver a tailored experience. This is further reinforced by the EA Play Live presentation showing a game mode where one tank takes on 20 EOD Bots. The classic Battlefield games are included not only for the sake of longtime fans to return to some of their favorite games, but to indulge in the absurdity that is an online Battlefield match. The Battlefield 2042 showdown between knives and defibrillators is as exciting as anything else shown in the trailers thus far.
