Warning! Spoilers ahead for Superman '78 #2!
DC Comics has released the solicitation info and cover art for Superman '78 #2, which showcases Superman teaming up with Lex Luthor. The series is set to expand the world of Christopher Reeve's Superman, continuing on from where the films left off. DC is capitalizing on the popularity of its past cinematic outings by finally adapting them to the comics and folding in many new ideas that were never seen in the films.
The villain of Superman '78 is Brainiac, who has landed in Metropolis and has begun causing chaos. The reason for Brainiac's arrival is unknown, but it's clear that he is here to create havoc and he doesn't come in peace. Perhaps he is looking to add to his bottled collection of cities? Brainiac was initially going to be the main villain of Richard Donner's sequel to 1978's Superman. Donner's initial ideas were scrapped when he left the project and since have never seen the light of day. Just like how DC is planning to revive a lot of unused concepts from Tim Burton's scrapped Batman Returns sequel in Batman '89, it looks like they are taking heavy inspiration from Donner's old ideas.
DC has revealed the official solicitation along with the cover art for Superman '78 #2 by Robert Venditti and Wilfredo Torres. Superman will defeat the mysterious robot who has been rampaging through Metropolis' streets. Naturally, Superman is going to want to know who sent it and why. This is where Lex Luthor comes in as Superman doesn't know anyone with such intelligence in technology as he has. Why Lex accepts the partnership remains unclear, however, it's been emphasized by DC in the past that Luthor doesn't take lightly to other villains trying to take control of Metropolis. Check out the cover art and solicitation below:

- After a battle with a rampaging robot, Superman enlists an unlikely ally to crack the code behind who sent it. He needs an intelligent technological genius, and that can only mean one person: Lex Luthor!
Ben Oliver's cover art features Gene Hackman's Lex Luthor shaking Superman's hand. It's astounding to see the pair of them team up, given their history. Superman's decision to enlist Lex is risky, and he knows it. He has probably taken every precaution to make sure he doesn't somehow double-cross him. Even his sideway glance at Lex in the cover art shows Superman isn't fully trusting. However, Superman knows that he needs Lex and is willing to take that risk for the good of Metropolis. Lex is tasked with cracking the code behind who sent Metropolis' rampaging new robot. His findings will lead to Superman coming face to face with Brainiac, his toughest villain yet.
After Lex's job is done aiding Superman, who knows what he does next. There's a slight chance that he simply leaves, but fans know how unlikely that is. Knowing Lex, it's more likely that he has some sort of scheme up his sleeve. Once Brainiac is a non-threat, Lex very well may attempt to take down Superman, once again. In the end, it's great to see Superman and Lex team up given their extreme rivalry. But especially in this form as it will continue Christopher Reeve's legacy as Superman in DC Comics, along with Gene Hackman's iconic iteration of Lex Luthor. Superman '78 #2 will be available on September 28.
