Cyberpunk 2077 Tops PlayStation Store Sales For June 2021

In a pretty surprising feat, Cyberpunk 2077 has topped the PlayStation Store's digital sales charts for June 2021. The game's sales quickly died off just weeks after its controversial launch, partially because it had been removed from the PlayStation Store. Now, Cyberpunk 2077 is back and it's returning to the store with a mighty vengeance as it beat out every other PS4 title on the store last month.

After a catastrophic launch in December 2020, Sony quickly removed Cyberpunk 2077 from its store and noted that it would bring it back after the game was fixed for consoles. Last month, Cyberpunk 2077 did return to the PlayStation Store, but it was hardly fixed. It was considered passable by Sony's standards, but the game was stripped down to the barest of bones for the standard PS4 version just to make it run at a somewhat consistent performance level. Sony even went as far as to slap a warning on the digital version of the game, telling players it doesn't recommend anyone buys Cyberpunk 2077 without owning a PS4 Pro or PS5.

Still, somehow Cyberpunk 2077 bested critically acclaimed games like Grand Theft Auto V on the sales charts for the PlayStation Store, according to a report from the PlayStation Blog. The return of the game allowed it to soar to the top of the charts, which is even more impressive as the game was only added in the last few days of June, meaning it had an even smaller window of time to get to the top compared to other titles. Despite the poor state of Cyberpunk 2077, it seems fans who were waiting for its return ate it up. Of course, the game is only available on PS4, so it's possible some people bought it to run in backward compatible mode on PS5, but there's no real way to discern how many people are running the controversial RPG on new-gen hardware.

It will be interesting to see how the game performs in July. There aren't too many substantial game releases for PlayStation consoles this month, which could open Cyberpunk 2077 up for an opportunity to perform well once more. Either way, it's hard to say how many people are still waiting to play the game on PS4. Cyberpunk 2077 was delisted to protect players, according to Sony, but has always been available to those who wanted to seek out a physical copy. Whether or not there's anyone still waiting to buy the game is unclear, but it may be best for those people to just wait for the PS5 version at this point.

Cyberpunk 2077 still has numerous issues on last-gen consoles, and players may be hesitant to pay full price for such a controversial title, even now that it has returned to PlayStation consoles. Still, it looks like there is still an audience for this game, in spite of all of its many flaws. Either way, Cyberpunk 2077 is available to purchase on all major platforms once again.
