Stranger Things star David Harbour recently commented on the story of the upcoming season 4, and unfortunately, his claims affirm the show will revisit one of its biggest issues. Stranger Things became a huge hit upon release in 2016, and the Netflix series has only grown in popularity in the years since. However, the sci-fi horror success story has not been without its pitfalls.
Stranger Things has earned critical acclaim and fan adulation for its small-town mystery plot, its fast-paced storytelling, and its compelling characters. However, the series has also earned criticism, whether it is for Stranger Things’ tendency to fake major character deaths to artificially inflate the show’s stakes or for its uneven tone. One issue that has plagued the series since season 2, though, is the inability of Stranger Things to tell bigger, more ambitious stories.
In this regard, Harbour’s recent comments to Collider should ring alarm bells for followers of the show: “I mean, it’s bigger, that’s the first thing. In scope, in scale, even in the idea that we’re not in Hawkins anymore." The news that season 4 will see Stranger Things leaving Hawkins behind for a bigger, more ambitious story will not be welcomed by many, as the show’s weakest storylines so far have seen it say goodbye to its small-town setting. Obviously, Hopper being stuck in Russia meant Stranger Things always needed to increase its scope but hearing this bigger vision might encompass the entire new season may be discouraging for those who wanted a return to the show’s more lowkey season 1 atmosphere.
The news Stranger Things will once again be leaving Hawkins doesn't bode well for the series, whose season 2 sojourn to Chicago remains one of its most-maligned subplots. The Chicago plot was one that many viewers felt slowed down the momentum built by an otherwise focused season, and the fact the next series never addressed this subplot made it clear it was not central to the overall story (although Stranger Things season 4 is set to fix this). As such, hearing this is the first and most important element of the new season according to its star is worrying for viewers who prize the show’s small-town atmosphere.
That said, hope is not lost for the denizens of Hawkins, Indiana. The much larger time gap between seasons caused by COVID-related filming delays means the writers of Stranger Things have had longer than usual to iron out story kinks or work on the plot. Meanwhile, the fact that Harbour’s storyline was always going to take place across various continents means the actor’s comments could apply mostly to his plot, and may not be true of season 4 as a whole. Recent trailers made it appear Stranger Things season 4 would avoid season 3’s problem of having too many ambitious, sprawling subplots for the show to afford each storyline sufficient attention. So with any luck, this will prove true despite the show growing bigger in its fourth outing.
