Warning! Spoilers for Suicide Squad: Get Joker #1 below.
A DC Comics vigilante is claiming to not only have participated in the January 6th riots at the U.S. Capitol but says he led the charge in the deadly attack. In a new look at the upcoming Suicide Squad: Get Joker #1, Wild Dog reveals why he was arrested: he led the charge during the insurrection under the pretense of believing he was fighting for freedom.
The United States Capitol attack occurred after a large group of people protesting the valid results of the 2020 Presidential Election gathered in Washington and burst into the Congressional building. Rioters and looters broke into several buildings in the area and even broke into the Senate and offices of U.S. representatives. In the end, hundreds of people were injured in the attack, and five people died, including a police officer. The riots were a stain on the democratic process and led to more than a hundred people getting arrested. Even months later, people are still being arrested and charged in connection to the attack.
Rich Johnston of BleedingCool.com shared snippets of the upcoming Suicide Squad: Get Joker #1 miniseries from Brian Azzarello, Alex Maleev, and Matt Hollingsworth. The Black Label mature-readers story features the Red Hood joining the Suicide Squad in order to kill the Clown Prince of Crime. Previous preview pages have shown the Red Hood reluctantly teaming up with the likes of Harley Quinn, but a new look reveals more of the team. BleedingCool shared small bits of panels of the first issue, where it's revealed the vigilante Wild Dog is on the team after leading the insurrection in Washington.
Wild Dog, who was once a marine before his entire team was killed in a terrorist attack, tells the Suicide Squad he led the charge on January 6th. His reasoning? He believes the United States is becoming lawless, and people are being "regulated to think." He wonders what happened to freedom. Wild Dog's talking points are straight out of the talking points of the people who stormed the Capitol in real life. It's fascinating to see DC Comics use the real-life event to explain Wild Dog joining the team.
Both DC Comics and Marvel Comics have villains and vigilantes whose love of freedom and American ideals overshadows real patriotism and doing the right thing. It's why Captain America questions the real American Dream. Unfortunately, in this case, Wild Dog's thought process has been warped by the worst values of what he thinks it means to be an American. Suicide Squad: Get Joker #1 is in comic book stores in August.
