Marvel Comics has seen numerous versions of Thor and wielders of his enchanted hammer Mjolnir. However, one of the best is finally taking the spotlight - and could likely be staying there. Some new releases and teases from the comic world suggest that Throg is moving up in the world.
Throg, a frog version of Thor, first debuted in comics in 1986 within the pages of Thor #364. He became a recurring character named Puddlegulp with his own alter ego (Simon Walterson) and officially took the name Throg in 2017. This hero wields Frogjolnir and is very capable of saving the day from major baddies despite his size. Now, this Thor is becoming a more well-known character and he may finally be here to stay.
On Twitter, the official account for Thor shared the cover for the upcoming Thor #18. It features Throg front and center. Additionally, a now-deleted Tweet from comic writer Donny Cates posted on July 15th leaked that the hopping hero isn't leaving anytime soon. He could be making far more appearances than fans may have expected - and in unexpected places. Although this comment has since been removed from the social media platform, fans should definitely expect to see more of the character in the near future, with Coates having tweeted, "there's a LOT more Throg content coming."
Throg is the central focus of the new cover for Thor #18. He wields Frogjolnir and has his powers on full display as he perches in a very froglike manner. Puddlegulp became Thor when Thor himself, in frog form (transformed by Loki, of course), was taken back to Asgard after a war with rats, leaving behind only a sliver of his hammer. Throg took this heavy sliver, raised it, and the powers of Thor were bestowed upon him. On occasion, he has returned within a few different comic series, but he has never had one of his own. Recently, he appeared in Thor #11-15, and he will likely continue to appear within this series since he's central to issue #18.
While it's not easy being green and he hasn't been at the forefront of any major series, Throg has been able to amass a fan following nonetheless. Considering his increasingly larger roles as of late, it doesn't seem impossible for the amphibious hero to begin standing on his own. He has been featured in Asgardians of the Galaxy, Thor, and even The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl within the world of Earth-616. He has also appeared in other universes and with Marvel teams, such as the Pet Avengers on Earth-6513 and Earth-97161, alongside Lockjaw, Redwing, Hairball, Lockheed, and Ms. Lion.
Though these characters are rather obscure, Throg is starting to move his way up in the world and there's no telling what team he may land on next. He could even bring back the Thor Corps, a team he formed that included Jane Foster, Beta Ray Bill, Brunnhilde, and numerous other Thors. Throg is hopping into the spotlight and this version of Thor might finally be getting the recognition he deserves in Marvel's universe.
