Mass Effect Makes Fun Of The Citadel's Keeper Scanning Side Quest

While sharing Mass Effect Legendary Edition player stats on Twitter, BioWare poked fun at the original Mass Effect's notorious "Scan the Keepers" side quests. Scattered around the Citadel are a series of large insectoid creatures that typically shouldn't be bothered. Known as Keepers, this particular species of alien has a long history in the Mass Effect universe that plays an interesting role in the overarching plot.

The first game in the award-winning trilogy tasks players with embarking on a side mission to scan all 21 Keepers on the Citadel for a curious scientist. As far as mission objectives go, "Scan the Keepers" is straightforward enough - players must simply find each insect-like creature and scan it. The trouble, however, rests in the difficulty in finding every one of the Keepers. Some are stationed at terminals in open spaces around the Citadel; meanwhile, others can be found tucked behind jagged corners or in rooms that players wouldn't otherwise need to visit. Naturally, keeping track of which ones have previously been tagged counts as an arduous task all its own.

BioWare shared a treasure trove of player stats on the official Mass Effect Twitter account, providing fans with a quick glance at information regarding Legendary Edition story choices, preferred squadmates, and so on. For example, 32 percent of players assumed the role of Female Shepard, with the remaining 68 percent choosing her male counterpart. And 60 percent of players chose to save Ashley on Virmire over Kaidan. But there's one statistic BioWare probably didn't need to run the numbers for -  the number of users who struggled to finish the Keeper side quest. The graphic for the Mass Effect stats in question features one card that jokes about all players spending "way too much time looking for the last Keeper which they SWEAR they scanned already."

The Keeper-related figure is all in good fun, of course, but it would be interesting to know the percentage of Legendary Edition players who saw the mission through to completion. Less than half seems as good a guess as any, though we may never know for certain.

After years of waiting, Mass Effect Legendary Edition hit stores this past May for PC and consoles, allowing franchise faithful and newcomers to experience the trilogy in an updated capacity. Some content didn't receive the update treatment, however, including Mass Effect's Pinnacle Station DLC and ME3's multiplayer suite.
