Masters of the Universe: Revelation made an old He-Man prototype canon in its fifth episode via King Grayskull. Voiced by Dennis Haysbert, King Grayskull was revealed to be the first champion of Eternia. The character has been used before, but he wasn’t a canon Masters of the Universe hero until now.
Sometime after the death of He-Man in Netflix's Masters of the Universe: Revelation, Teela (voiced by Sarah Michelle Gellar), Andra, Evil-Lyn, Roboto, and Beast Man found themselves trapped in Preternia, a heaven-like world occupied by deceased warriors from Eternia’s past. While there, they encountered former champions of Eternia, including Wun-Dar, He-Ro, and Prince Adam himself. One, in particular, King Grayskull, was revealed to have been Eternia’s original champion and also the namesake of Castle Grayskull. It was thanks to his guidance the main characters – and Prince Adam – were eventually able to return to Eternia.
It’s also interesting to note that King Grayskull’s inclusion in the season 1 finale ending actually brings a forgotten He-Man prototype into its continuity. In the early 2000s, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe was in production as a reboot of the original series. It was revealed in an interview with the cartoon’s producer, Ian Richter, that one of the earlier designs for He-Man would have featured the character with long hair. This look wasn’t used, but Richter decided it could still be worked into the show somehow.
As a result, it became the basis for the design of a new character, who they named King Grayskull. It was established in “The Power of Grayskull” episode that King Grayskull was the original ruler of Eternia and the heroic warrior who saved the world from the evil villain Hordak. Toys were also produced of the King Grayskull character, but since he was only a part of Eternia’s past, he never made further appearances. Since 2002’s He-Man and the Masters of the Universe exists in a separate continuity from the original, King Grayskull didn’t become canon until Revelation, which serves as a true sequel series to the 1983 show.
For the most part, Masters of the Universe: Revelation’s King Grayskull closely resembles the one depicted in the 2002 cartoon. Both characters have long hair and have white fur on their He-Man-inspired armor. The biggest difference is that Revelation’s version is Black, which is a change attributed at least partially to the idea that He-Man and Grayskull would be less unique if they looked too similar to each other [via Bounding Into Comics]. His addition to official canon amounts to a nice touch made by the new show. Thus far, Revelation is making several meaningful and appreciated contributions to Eternia lore, other than just Grayskull. For instance, He-Ro was previously an unreleased prototype figure, but now he’s a part of Eternia’s history also.
