New World: How to Find More Iron (& What It’s For)

Though it is primarily full of intense, action-RPG-style combat, Amazon Games' MMO New World also includes a robust crafting system that allows players to harvest resources in the world, improve crafting skills like Blacksmithing and Smelting, and create their own early-game gear and tools. Iron is one of the key resources players will need in the early game in New World, and they can harvest it in all four of the starting zones in the Highlands. To get Iron Ore, players will need to mine Iron Veins. These are large, rust-colored rocks that appear throughout Aeternum.

While players don't need specific stats to start mining Iron in New World, they will need a mining pickaxe and access to a Smelting station. Early-game pickaxes are made of Wood and Flint and can be obtained before players ever reach their first settlement, making it easy to begin harvesting basic resources right away. Once an Iron Vein has been depleted in New World, players will need to wait several minutes for it to respawn and provide more. This can allow fans to travel around a small, reliable group of Iron Veins for near-unlimited access to Iron Ore. Here's how to get more Iron in New World.

Iron Ore is one of the more plentiful resources in New World's Highlands, in any of the early game starting zones. Players can find Iron Veins in Everfall, Windswood, First Light, and Monarch's Bluff. Of these, Everfall and First Light are the best locations for Iron mining in New World so far. There are a few nodes in the Southern Area and Cutlass Keys locations that are close to starting settlements.

Iron can usually be found most consistently in rocky parts of the world and near mountains and hills. Players can also find some Iron Veins near caves where Expeditions take place.

Once players mine Iron Ore from an Iron Vein, it will stay depleted for 10 to 15 minutes. If players find a group of nodes, they can set up a camp nearby and move between each node, mine Iron Ore, and transport the Iron Ore back to camp to store or smelt. This way, they can harvest a lot of Iron Ore in a short period of time.

Iron Ore cannot be used on its own in New World. Players will need to smelt it into Iron Bars, which can then be used to craft everything from tools to weapons and armor. Smelting stations can be found in every major settlement, and players can complete Town Projects to improve their smelting ability. Unfortunately, a player's crafting levels and other beta progress won't carry into the full New World release, so whatever players do with mining and smelting now will only be practice for launch.
