The episode length for James Gunn and John Cena's upcoming HBO Max series Peacemaker has been revealed. A new addition to the DC Extended Universe, Peacemaker will first make his debut in Gunn's upcoming DCEU debut The Suicide Squad. He will join Harley Quinn, Bloodsport, King Shark, and a slew of other villains in their dangerous mission on Corto Maltese. Peacemaker has been described as "a douchey Captain America," being so obsessed with peace that he'll do anything to achieve it, even kill. Gunn wrote the entirety of the series for HBO Max and is directing five of the eight episodes.
In addition to Cena, Peacemaker stars Orange is the New Black's Danielle Brooks, Chukwudi Iwuji, Robert Patrick, and a slew of recurring characters. Steve Agee, Freddie Stroma, and Jennifer Holland will be reprising their roles from The Suicide Squad as John Economos, Vigilante, and Emilia Harcourt, respectively. The series will be a prequel to The Suicide Squad, showing Peacemaker's origins and quite possibly how he ended up in Belle Reve.
With filming on Peacemaker wrapped, Gunn revealed new tidbits about the series to Collider, including how long each episode will be. The director said that the episodes will vary in length, but most of them come in around the 40-minute range. Gunn pointed to the traditional length of episodic network television as something that helped him work out the pacing of the episodes and the length they would be.
They're more like 40-something minutes. They vary. Some are longer than others and some are shorter. But basically, I was kind of in the range of what is your actual, traditional hour-long, which is between 40 and 44 minutes.
In the era of prestige streaming television, many series have episodes that run much longer than the typical 40-something minutes network television is allotted. Plenty clock in well above the hour mark without commercials and this has led to some criticism, including highlight the plodding pacing of many shows that choose to go over this mark. It sounds like Peacemaker won't have that problem and that's probably for the best.
Gunn is known for his quippy, fast-paced writing and that seems fitting for Cena's character and the world the director is building in The Suicide Squad. For the most part, it seems like Peacemaker will be an expansion of that world, one that could have the director working in the DCEU for quite some time. First, though, Gunn will complete Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for Marvel, his last film about that group of cosmic heroes. If Peacemaker is successful enough on HBO Max, though, the director could find himself moving on from the MCU and working with a different kind of ragtag group of antiheroes with Cena at the center.
