PlayStation 5 Software Beta's Biggest Changes | Screen Rant

Sony's PlayStation 5 has been out for a while now, and while many are still having trouble securing one due to the high demand and ongoing PS5 and Xbox Series X/S chip shortage, Sony has had time to gather feedback and begin rolling out some big changes to the system's software. A beta version of PlayStation 5 system software version 2.0-04.00.00 has started to reach members of the PS5 software beta program. Those who signed up for the beta program (and were lucky enough to be selected) should expect an email from Sony relatively soon.

The biggest change by far is one that many PS5 owners will be glad to take advantage of - extended storage. Third party M.2 SSDs can now be inserted into the PlayStation 5's storage expansion slot on the inside of the machine. The process requires a little bit of mechanical know-how, but there will surely be plenty of guides published in the next few weeks. PS5 owners should keep in mind that the PS5 storage expansion is only for beta users, so anyone not in the software beta program will have to wait until the software update fully releases before installing an additional SSD.

Alongside the storage expansion, another launch window promise Sony is delivering on is the ability to use 3D audio with TV speakers. While they won't be as immersive as a headset utilizing 3D audio, this update may go a long way in improving directional sound on TV speakers. The 3D audio update is also bringing a neat trick to the DualSense, where the system will use the controller's microphone to gauge the acoustics of the room, and set up a specialized 3D audio profile.

A common critique since its release late last year has been the PS5's user interface and menus. The home screen and control center are often cumbersome to navigate, with some menus - specifically the trophy section - perhaps in need of a redesign. Luckily the trophy menu is getting just such an overhaul, and will appear as a vertical list (similar to how it was on the PlayStation 4), instead of emulating the activity cards feature from the control center. Tracking is another new feature coming to trophies, letting players select up to five trophies per game to track in the control center, with the option to pin those five to the side of the screen during gameplay.

The control center itself will also be more customizable. In the current version of the PS5 system software, only select icons can be rearranged and hidden; the update will allow the entire control center bar to be rearranged. The control center has a few other changes as well, mostly quality of life improvements to the Game Base section (a full list of which has been compiled by Gematsu), but larger changes are coming to the home screen in the PlayStation 5 software beta.

Ease of use will be increased on the PS5 home screen by the beta software update prioritizing the "Installed" tab in the game library. The library will also more clearly show which platform (PS4 or PS5) version is installed. This change will be mirrored on the home screen itself, where multiple tiles will now appear if two versions of one game are installed. The PlayStation 5 system software update is just now ramping up for those who registered for the software beta program, and the new update won't be widely available until a bit later this year, though it's unclear when exactly Sony plans on releasing it.
