A new mod for Rockstar Games' Red Dead Redemption 2 will finally allow players to purchase and even customize their own houses. The features are two of the most highly-requested for the game's online counterpart, Red Dead Online, and now modders have taken the matter into their own hands in RDR2. While the online version still doesn't have player homes, a recent update did add robberies to Red Dead Online.
Red Dead Redemption 2 might be one of the most highly-regarded single-player games of all time thanks to its emotional story and stunning visuals, but Red Dead Online has been the subject of criticism since its release. As well as suffering from bugs and glitches, Red Dead Online has a griefing problem, with lots of players unable to enjoy the title due to roaming gangs looking to kill and loot. The game has not seen as many regular content updates as Rockstar's other online offering, GTA Online; many fans have complained of a lack of meaningful content for Red Dead Online. Purchasable properties are one of many things the RDO community has asked for, but the single-player RDR2 has gotten the feature first thanks to the new mod.
Designed as endgame content for Red Dead Redemption 2, the Buyable Properties mod was created by Bolmin_and_Dick_Hertz and uploaded to NexusMods by bolmin70. As spotted by Eurogamer, the mod offers three customizable houses to choose from, found near Strawberry, Rhodes, and in the Heartlands. Hotel rooms can also be bought, with a range of rooms available across Valentine, Saint Denis, and more. Both the interior and exterior of these properties are customizable. Once purchased, homes can be used for sleeping and storing items, with the modders planning to expand their functionality in the future.

Players looking to try out the RDR2 Buyable Properties mod will need to have installed other mods before it'll work. It's also worth noting that properties will only appear in the epilogue map, meaning players will need to have completed Red Dead Redemption 2 before installing. The mod is only compatible with PC versions of RDR2, and won't work on console. Download instructions are available on the NexusMods website.
While buyable properties are unlikely to ever come to Red Dead Redemption 2 in any official capacity, it's possible that they could come to the ever-evolving Red Dead Online. Rockstar Games has been known to take inspiration from its communities in the past, even implementing GTA Online load time fixes discovered by a player. It's hoped that the online Red Dead game will eventually catch up to GTA Online in terms of expansions, content, and gameplay. It's easy to compare the two games, but it's worth recognizing that GTA Online released in 2013 compared to RDO's 2018 release date, meaning the prior game has had half a decades' worth of extra development time and updates by comparison. Here's hoping that Red Dead Online will receive meaningful updates in the future.
