Sarah Michelle Gellar Says Her Kids Started Watching Buffy

Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Sarah Michelle Gellar reveals the reaction her kids had to watching the show. Gellar played the title character in the series, which ran from 1997 to 2003 and initially followed Buffy as a teenager who battles the forces of darkness while also balancing the responsibilities of high school.

From that relatively simple premise, and with the help of a strong cast and incisive writing, Buffy has been regularly cited as one of the most influential and memorable shows of all time. Dissertations have been written on the series' themes and ideas, while groundbreaking Buffy episodes like “The Body” and “Hush” helped to alter the perception of what television was capable of offering audiences. Given its impact, Buffy regularly attracts new viewers. Gellar’s 11-year-old daughter Charlotte and her 8-year-old son Rocky, the two children she shares with husband Freddie Prinze Jr., are two of the recent devotees.

During an interview with ET to promote Masters of the Universe: Revelation, in which she voices the character of Teela, Gellar shared that her kids started to watch Buffy over the past year. The actress noted that though they were fans of the show, they tended to focus their appreciation on different aspects. Read Gellar’s quote below:

My kids, up until the pandemic, hadn’t really seen anything that I had done except, I think they’d seen Scooby Doo. But during the pandemic, my daughter and my son started Buffy, and it was so interesting to watch their reactions. My boy was into it for the villains, and my daughter was into it for the love stories.

Gellar's comments illustrate why the series has endured, continuing to be relevant well beyond its final episode, because it succeeds on a number of different levels. The villains, from Angelus in season 2 to Glory in season 5, were either tied to the core characters in some way or simply entertaining in their own right. And on the occasion that the Big Bads faltered, such as in season 4 with Adam, there were still plenty of other aspects to recommend. Buffy was also adept at crafting relationships that viewers could root for and debate, as seen when even notable politicians weighed in on the question of Buffy's romantic partners.

Still, beyond the romantic entanglements, there is another frequent disagreement amongst viewers. Some consider the first three seasons of the show to be its best, while still appreciating the middle installments. Others prefer the last two seasons, citing its darker tone and reflection of how life can change after high school. It’d be interesting to hear which side Gellar’s kids leaned to during their first watch. By all accounts, however, like so many other viewers, it sounds like they love Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
