Paramount+ unveils the first Star Trek: Prodigy trailer teasing the return of Voyager Starfleet Captain Kathryn Janeway for the animated series. The animated series hails from Trollhunters writers Dan and Kevin Hageman, who are also executive producing the project alongside Alex Kurtzman as part of his overall deal with CBS Television Studios for the expanded Star Trek universe. Star Trek: Prodigy is one of multiple animated titles in the universe alongside Paramount+'s acclaimed adult venture Star Trek: Lower Decks from Rick and Morty and Solar Opposites alum Mike McMahan.
Star Trek: Prodigy is set in the year 2383 after the events of Star Trek: Voyager and centers on a motley crew of teenage aliens who must learn to work together to salvage an abandoned starship and set out for adventure in the Delta Quadrant. The young group will be helped by Kate Mulgrew's Janeway, who serves as a safety hologram aboard the starship. Development on the series was announced shortly after the release of Star Trek: Lower Decks and was ordered for two 10-episode seasons at Paramount+, the first of which will air after the fact on Nickelodeon ahead of season 2's premiere.
During its appearance at this weekend's Comic-Con@Home, Paramount+ unveiled the first Star Trek: Prodigy trailer. Offering a look at the young cast of characters seeking adventure amongst the stars, the video also teases the return of Voyager's Janeway for the animated series. Check out the teaser trailer below:

Unlike Star Trek: Lower Decks, the new series will see a more kid-friendly approach to the long-running sci-fi franchise, but the first trailer points towards an interesting blend of a serious tone with lighter humor. Though many young audiences may not be as familiar with the larger Star Trek mythology or franchise, the first trailer for Star Trek: Prodigy does create a sense of a good starting point for newcomers to the series. Additionally, the cast for Star Trek: Prodigy is certainly full of exciting talent between Big Mouth alum Jason Mantzoukas to legendary voice actor Dee Bradley Baker and Army of the Dead star Ella Purnell.
Moreover, the inclusion of the USS Voyager in Star Trek: Prodigy should prove a draw for longtime fans of the franchise curious to see how it ties into the timeline. Though the inclusion of Janeway may turn some viewers off, the Starfleet captain does have enough of a following to bring many viewers to the table. Only time will tell when Star Trek: Prodigy debuts on Paramount+ sometime this fall.
