Star Wars: 10 Unpopular Opinions About Darth Vader (According To Reddit)

There are some Star Wars characters who are so instantly recognizable, so immensely iconic that they are known even by those with zero interest in the Galaxy far far away. No character fits that more than Darth Vader, one of the greatest villains in cinematic history, and main character of the Skywalker Saga, the character whose rise and fall dictate the shape of the Galaxy.

There is no character in canon more explored, nor more consistently excellent than Darth Vader. As beloved as he is though, there are still unpopular opinions surrounding the character, something to which Reddit can attest.

10 He Is No Longer Interesting

As mentioned above, Vader is a character with such depth, who continues to be explored in all manner of Star Wars medium, especially recently in the comics.

As fantastic as all his content usually is, Redditor u/JoeCool2008 believes Vader has now been made so overpowered that he is not interesting anymore. While there are many who believe Star Wars needs to deep dive into new faces, it is not an often voiced criticism that Vader is too overpowered and is not interesting.

9 He Would Kill Padmé

One of the most fascinating aspects of Vader's character is his attachment to Padmé that has persisted long after her death. Fans have seen flashbacks and moments shared between the two and it has been heartbreaking to see.

Redditor u/TimberWolfII believes that if Padmé were to somehow come back, Vader would simply kill her. This is an interesting opinion, as it does appear that if somehow Padmé lived, Vader would probably kill Sidious instead. That would be a fascinating choice to see him forced to make. Kill the woman who he obsessively adores or stay on the dark side where he was driven because of the fear of her death.

8 His Original Trilogy Development Is Jarring

Darth Vader is one of the best and most memorable parts of the original trilogy, going from a fairly one-dimensional, yet immense, baddie in A New Hope, to a villain with a lot of depth and history in the next two.

For one deleted Redditor Vader's development is jarring and even nonsensical, going from certified henchman to father of Luke. It is a criticism not often heard, especially now with all the development and added backstory to Vader's character. The Redditor believes it more jarring than the reveal of Luke and Leia being siblings, which is hard to argue given their kiss on Hoth.

7 He Is A Bad Lightsaber Duelist

Darth Vader is involved in all three lightsaber duels in the original trilogy, as well as an iconic duel on Mustafar in the prequels. While his battle against Obi-Wan on the Death Star is lackluster, the others are astonishing to watch.

Redditor u/Its_OPji believes Vader to be a bad lightsaber duelist, at least in the movies that is. There is an argument as he loses his first against Obi-Wan on Mustafar, and Obi-Wan lets him win on the Death Star. However, Vader's power with a blade is well established, and his power and presence in a duel is second to none. Even though he did not kill anyone in the original trilogy with his lightsaber, he is a threatening duelist.

6 He Did Not Deserve Redemption

Darth Vader's redemption arc is considered one of the best stories in all of Star Wars, and gives a phenomenal ending to the original trilogy, with Luke Skywalker helping pull his father back to the light side.

Reddito  u/Thelongwayaround believes Vader's redemption was unearned and that everything he did was unforgivable. There may not be many who agree Vader was suddenly a good person again, but overall with the tragic life he led, and how there was good deep down in him, that the Anakin part deserved the redemption.

5 He Is The Only Interesting Member Of The Skywalker Family

The Skywalker family is one full of tragedy as well as brilliance, with the likes of Anakin, Luke, Leia, and Ben Solo all being blood relatives, with the likes of Rey and Padmé being folded in also.

Redditor u/JESUSSAYSNO believes the only genuinely interesting member of the family is Anakin. It is not unpopular to say Anakin/Vader is the most interesting character of the family, of the franchise even, but to say the likes of Leia through her life, Luke in The Last Jedi, and Ben in the sequels are not interesting is a very hot take.

4 Canto Bight > Vader Hallway Scene

The Last Jedi is undoubtedly the most divisive Star Wars film out there. One of its more contested, even disliked parts is when Finn and Rose travel to Canto Bight, a section of the movie that disappointed many.

Redditor u/amadeusthunderfunk clearly likes the scene, as they claim it is better than one of the most iconic Star Wars movie scenes ever; Darth Vader's hallway massacre in Rogue One. That scene has widely been viewed as one of Vader's greatest moments, while Canto Bight has been called a disappointment by many, so that is one unpopular opinion.

3 A New Hope Is The Weakest Original Trilogy Movie Due To The Lack Of Vader

The original trilogy will forever be seen as the best Star Wars trilogy by so many fans, and all three movies have something to offer, with A New Hope usually being seen as one of the top two, typically alongside The Empire Strikes Back.

Redditor u/IanBarreilles puts A New Hope bottom of the three, all because of Vader. Vader's lack of screen time in A New Hope compared to the other two original trilogy movies puts it bottom for them. While Vader is one of the best original trilogy characters, it is uncommon to believe A New Hope is weaker because of having not enough of him.

2 He Was Better As A Henchman

The idea of Vader's layered character and the numerous pieces of content that delve into his psyche and character surrounds many unpopular opinions around the character.

One such opinion comes from Redditor u/javelinnl who believes Vader was better as a henchman, rather than a centerpiece, a standout villain and character with such layer because he upstages other characters. This is arguably true, as Vader can upstage characters with his presence and his brilliance. However with the amount of incredible content out there surrounding him, few will wish he was simply a henchman and nothing more.

1 Return Of The Jedi Sucks Because Of His Redemption

The typical line of thinking is that Return of the Jedi falls at bottom of the original trilogy rankings in terms of quality, usually due to some writing elements more than anything else.

Redditor u/Darkimus-prime seemingly agrees that it is the worst of the lot, believing it sucks because of Vader and his redemption. To many, Vader's redemption and the way Luke Skywalker goes about acting as a catalyst for said redemption is the best part of Return, certainly not the reason why it is a bad movie.
