Stephen King Recovers From Surgery With British Cop Show Line Of Duty

Legendary horror author Stephen King recovers from a recent dental surgery by watching the latest season of long-running British cop show Line of Duty. Written and created by Jed Mercurio, who is perhaps best known to American audiences for creating the Richard Madden-led political thriller Bodyguard, BBC’s Line of Duty premiered in 2012. It focuses on the efforts of AC-12, a unit of anti-corruption officers led by Superintendent Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar) who work to root out crooked cops in the British police system. In addition to Dunbar, the show stars Vicky McClure and Martin Compston as AC-12 officers Kate Fleming and Steve Arnott.

Each season of Line of Duty features a guest lead who becomes entangled in AC-12’s investigations. An impressive selection of British talent has stepped into these roles, starting with The Walking Dead’s Lennie James in season 1, and including performers such as Keeley Hawes (Bodyguard) and Thandiwe Newton (Westworld). The most recent sixth season features Scottish actress Kelly Macdonald (Harry Potter, Boardwalk Empire) as Detective Chief Inspector Jo Davidson, who comes under AC-12’s suspicion for possible ties to organized crime. The investigation into Davidson coincides with an increase in pressure on AC-12 from within the police force.

It seems the popular cop drama has found a fan in King. He posted about his deep appreciation for Line of Duty a few times over the past weeks and even compared it to The Wire, and now he shares on Twitter that he recently experienced a “very painful” tooth extraction and is “treating it with Season Six of LINE OF DUTY.” See his tweet below:

King, who made waves online in May for correctly predicting the ending of Mare of Easttown, followed up his original tweet about Line of Duty with a quote from Dunbar’s Hastings, adding “If you don’t get it, you missed a great series.”  Series stars McClure and Compston both shared King’s post, adding celebratory emojis. Compston called King’s reaction to season 6 “superb.” They also responded gratefully to King’s earlier posts in praise of the show, along with creator Mercurio, who thanked the horror legend and said, “I’m such a huge fan. “On Writing” helped make me a writer. This is an incredible honor.”

With the recent end of season 6, fans of Line of Duty are impatient for news of whether or not the cop drama will return for another installment. Though the last episode seemed to tie up some long-standing storylines, including the identity of H, a “bent” cop whom AC-12 has been chasing for years, it’s unclear if the recent reveal was the truth or simply another red herring. With the crafty Mercurio in charge, anything is possible. As for King, now that he's finished Line of Duty, only time will tell what show he chooses to watch - and tweet about - next.
