Netflix has revealed the first trailer for Sweet Girl, a film centered on a father and daughter (played by Jason Momoa and Isabela Merced) who seek revenge against a pharmaceutical company. Along with the two leads, the cast also includes Adria Arjona, Justin Bartha, Amy Brenneman, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Raza Jaffrey, Lex Scott Davis, and Michael Raymond-James. Brian Andrew Mendoza, who previously worked with Momoa as a producer on Netflix's Frontier and as a cinematographer on the action-adventure movie Braven, is making his feature directorial debut on the project.
Momoa stars in Sweet Girl as Ray Cooper, a devoted family man who vows to seek justice against the pharmaceutical company responsible for pulling a potentially life-saving drug from the market just before his wife dies from cancer. However, his search for the truth results in a deadly encounter that puts both him and his daughter Rachel in harm's way and leads to the two embarking on a quest for vengeance. Originally announced to be in development in mid 2019, the film's Netflix debut is right around the corner, and now the streaming platform is looking to build anticipation for the thriller.
A few months after releasing the first image of Momoa in the film, Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for Sweet Girl. Paired with Guns n' Roses' "Sweet Child of Mine" and slowly ramping up from dramatic to fast-paced, the video offers a look at the emotional story and pulse-pounding action seen in the film. Pharmaceutical corporations are very divisive in the U.S. and have been explored in a number of ways on film, from Steven Soderbergh's subtler attack Side Effects to Fernando Meirelles' true story-inspired The Constant Gardener. Taking a more action-heavy approach with Sweet Girl certainly seems like a better fit for producer/star Momoa and the trailer certainly teases a number of exciting set pieces for the star. Between the hand-to-hand combat against a number of assailants to a harrowing leap from Pittsburgh Pirates stadium PNC Park into the neighboring Allegheny River, the Aquaman star is clearly ready to deliver more of the thrilling action sequences he's become known for.
But on top of that, the trailer for Sweet Girl suggests a more emotional plot and character from Momoa than some may be used to seeing, allowing him the opportunity to display a solid range in his repertoire. Paired with the on-the-rise Dora star Merced, who looks to be delivering plenty of her own kick-ass moments, the trailer is very promising. Sweet Girl is set to arrive on Netflix on August 20.
