The Witcher 3's Super-Detailed Novigrad Explained By CD Projekt Red

CD Projekt Red, developer of The Witcher video game trilogy, has detailed the design process behind The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's super-detailed city of Novigrad. CD Projekt Red first began work on the action role-playing series, based on the series of novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, with 2007's The Witcher. The launch of 2015's Wild Hunt brought the developer a new level of fame and critical acclaim.

In June 2021 WitcherCon, a Witcher television and game event was announced to stream in July. The collaboration would bring together CD Projekt Red, developer of the Witcher video games, and Witcher live-action series distributor Netflix. The announcement came just two months after filming wrapped on the second season of the Witcher Netflix series, which stars Henry Cavill as the titular Witcher, Geralt of Rivia. The streaming event was anticipated to bring big news and revelations about the fantasy franchise. Many Witcher fans have highly anticipated the event, with some hoping for news about the show's second season while others dream of news about a fourth game in CD Projekt Red's game series. To build anticipation, the Witcher Twitter account shared files allowing fans to 3D print Geralt's iconic medallion.

During the first stream of WitcherCon, uploaded to YouTube by Netflix, CD Projekt Red reveals how The Witcher 3's city of Novigrad was created. The location was already known and loved by fans who had read Andrzej Sapkowski's novels, so the game developer did an abundance of research in order to perfectly recreate the city. Novigrad's status as a merchant city influenced its design, with CD Projekt Red adding a large harbor and crane to reflect that function. All of these fine details, even noticed subconsciously, help players become immersed as Geralt within the game's world.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt takes place across several massive and highly detailed maps, including Novigrad, Velen and Kaer Morhen. These areas are both incredibly deadly and breathtakingly beautiful, allowing players to become completely immersed in the story of the White Wolf Geralt. One exceptionally creative fan even managed to program a beautiful Witcher 3 location into their treadmill. The jogger, monster slayer and Reddit user bird_berson22 was able to import Toussaint, the setting of the Witcher 3 expansion Blood and Wine, into their treadmill. This allows for a truly immersive experience of walking through the world of the iconic fantasy series, with the machine even adjusting to the fictional terrain's inclines and declines.

The Witcher franchise has grown massively in the last few years, with video games and live-action series bringing the fantasy novels to a whole new audience. CD Projekt Red's care and attention to detail is a huge part of that success, as the game trilogy has successfully immersed and bewitched countless players. The detail that the developer put into The Witcher 3's city of Novigrad reflects a much wider attention to detail throughout the entire Witcher trilogy.
