While Pokémon GO may have started off with a simple and straightforward premise, since its 2016 launch the game has evolved to host a wide range of features and challenges for players to tackle. Despite that, the primary goal of Pokémon GO - and arguably that of the Pokémon franchise as a whole - has remained the same. Trainers are tasked with completely filling out their Pokédex in an effort to "catch 'em all". Why, then, does Pokémon GO make hatching eggs so much more rewarding than actually catching Pokémon?
The AR in Pokémon GO allows players to encounter virtual Pokémon in their real-world communities, placing Pokéstops and Pokémon Gyms at noteworthy locations to encourage getting outside and walking around. It was made clear from the start that outdoor exercise was a major focus of Pokémon GO's release - if players were moving too fast via driving a car they wouldn't be able to access Pokéstops, and few Pokémon would spawn if players were remaining stationary. It wasn't the first mobile game to put an emphasis on movement, but it was one of the most popular, quickly becoming the biggest mobile game in US history.
Its playerbase has significantly waned since its initial release, but the game is still going strong as of 2021. Multiple major updates have been made to Pokémon GO, adding everything from trading and PvP trainer battles to the inclusion of Team Rocket. Raid battles, field research, and the gradual introduction of more gens and Legendary Pokémon has helped to keep the game alive over the last five years. Despite all these new inclusions, though, two of the core features of Pokémon GO have remained mostly unchanged: catching Pokémon and hatching eggs. Eggs in particular are noteworthy if only due to the fact that the way they work - and the rewards they offer - are seemingly indicative of the game's whole purpose.
Similarly to other Pokémon games, players have to walk a certain amount of steps in order to hatch a Pokémon egg. The difference with Pokémon GO, however, is that they have to be physical steps instead of simply moving a joystick or pressing a button on a gaming controller. There are different levels of eggs, which vary depending on the number of kilometers trainers will have to walk to hatch them. Higher-leveled eggs will reap more lucrative rewards, such as rarer Pokémon or more candies, which are items that can be used to power up and evolve Pokémon that have already been registered in the Pokédex.
Players were quick to note that the amount of candy received from hatching eggs is much higher than what could be collected from just catching Pokémon. While there are no set numbers outlined in the game, it seems to be around 10 candies for 2km eggs and upwards of 30 for 10km eggs. Comparatively, Pokémon will only give out 3 candy when caught, though second or third tier evolutions result in marginally more. While one reason for this is because it takes more time to hatch eggs than to encounter Pokémon, another reason is likely just to make the process of hatching eggs more worthwhile. By doing so, Pokémon GO helps encourage players to exercise through walking, further emphasizing one of the primary points of the game.
