Before she became a reality television star, Amy had an average Kentucky childhood. Amy was born on October 28, 1987, making her 33. Amy grew up in Dixon, Kentucky, where she went to Union High School. While at high school, Amy met her long-term boyfriend and eventual husband, Michael Halterman. Amy got married to Michael on March 15, 2019, during a ceremony in Nashville, Tennessee. Although Amy is married, her sister Tammy remains a major part of the television personality's life. Amy and Michael take care of Tammy, who requires assistance to complete most of her day-to-day tasks. Amy has masterfully balanced taking care of her sister, starting a family, and launching her career on reality TV.

Amy and her sister weren't just handed their own show on TLC. Before Amy and Tammy starred on 1000-Lb. Sisters, Amy was producing videos of her own on YouTube. Amy originally joined the video-sharing platform over a decade ago in January 2011. Amy uploaded a variety of content, from makeup videos to viral challenges. Amy also uploaded vlogs that gave the world a peek into her family's daily lives. Amy's YouTube captured viewers' attention and, over time, Amy amassed hundreds of thousands of subscribers and millions of views. Currently, Amy has 457,000 subscribers and her channel has gained over 48 million views. According to The Courier Journalit was Amy's fanbase that reached out to TLC and got the Slaton sisters on the network's radar. Amy and Tammy agreed to make a show to chronicle their weight-loss journey and the series premiered on January 1, 2020.

One reason why Amy embarked on a weight-loss journey was to have children. Amy and Michael knew they wanted kids, but the reality star had to lose weight before it would be advisable that she attempt to get pregnant. Eventually, Amy lost enough weight to qualify for bariatric surgery, an operation that adjusts digestive systems to increase weight loss. Amy's doctor recommended she put her parenthood plans on hold for two years so her body can adjust following the surgery. Amy and Michael couldn't wait to start their family, however, and the star was pregnant soon after completing her procedure. In November 2020, Amy gave birth to her son Gage without any major complications. Amy has dedicated her social media to her growing family. On Instagram, Amy shares a slew of pictures of Gage with her 262,000 followers about once a week.
